One thing I've read and have done before is when that happens get baking soda right away and pour it on the area it will soak it up, then vacuum it up if you have a wet/dry vac. Keep pouring the baking soda on and vacuum until it clears, I've done this on my carpet in my bedroom with spilled coffee my carpet was a blue color, you can't even notice it now. Also try searching online real quick for getting stains out, for things you have at home you could use.
When I vacuumed it up I didn't use a wet/dry vac just a regular one and was glad that it didn't ruin it from the wet clumps of baking soda. So be careful if you do.

Use a towel (paper towel would be great) and let it absorb the soda. . . . once most of it is out, spray the area with water and use some sort of detergent (even dish washing liquid should work) and use an old tooth brush to scrub the area and use a towel and clean up the area using lots of water and dry it using dry paper towels once done.
Once the carpet is fully dry use a comb or a brush to adjust the carpet fibers (get the knots and whatnot out).

The best thing to do with a spill of soda, wine, grape juice....pour bottled soda water (clear) on it immediately. It will bubble up the stain, then use a big bath towel to soak it up and wash the towel in the washer. Done. Do it as soon as the spill occurs and you won't have a lasting stain.

Try what I do.. I take an old toothbrush that I use for just such a thing.. I take a little laundry soap and scrub it in with the toothbrush.. then I take a clean white cloth soaked in warm water.. and press it into the stain really hard.. don't rub it or the stain will just get bigger.. it usually works really well.
Even for paint, chocolate, spaghetti sauce.....

Dab, don't scrub, with cool water and mild soap. Oxy also has this spray that you can use for carpets. TEST on a small non-visible area first to see if it will work. I hope that the baby wasn't drinking the soda though!

I use hydrogen piroxide just pour it on let it sit for a min. then dab it up with a towel. It works on coffee too and is alot cheaper then carpet cleaners about $.50 a bottle.

first blot with an absorbant sponge or cloth, keep blotting up all you can, rinsing the cloth with clean water, do this for a long time, next try oxy clean, dissolve oxy clean in water, wet another clean cloth or sponge in the oxy clean water, and blot the stain again, rinse the cloth in clean water, dip it in the oxy clean, blot it on the stain, it takes a while, but you will get the pop stain out this way
