I have not been thru it myself but i am an RN at a childrens hospital in the pre-op and recovery room areas in surgery. your child will come into the preop area and they'll get history..aska buncha questions and more than likely give your child some medicine that will make him or her act sleepy/loopy that helps with seperation anxiety..(you really have to watch them after they have it) once they take the child back the surgery usually lasts about 30-60 minutes. the surgeon will probably ask you stay in the room (you do NOT want to miss him after surgery) and he will come talk to you when he is done with surgery let you know how the baby did and give you detailed instructions regarding home care (ASK HIM IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING) the nurses may then let you take a break while he is in the recovery room. he or she will be in recovery room 30-60 minutes and then the nurse will bring him or her back to you. they will get IV pain meds if needed in recovery and the surgeon also usually injects numbing medicine into the belly so the babies are usually pretty comfortable afterwards as far as pain goes! when the baby comes back the anesthesia smetimes makes them extremely agitated and or fussy and the things you normally do to calm them down dont work sometimes..Dont worry..Its just the anesthesia not pain and will usually pass within about 30 minutes or so. afterwards the surgeon will either tell you to use tylenol with codeine or plain old infant tylenol for pain every 4-6 hours. usually at age 1 babies do soooo well all they need is plain old tylenol every 4 hours..you'll be surpirsed. you will have to keep him from wrestling around for a few weeks until you go for a follow up visit but otherwise he can go back to normal activities the day after...babies bounce back quick!!! Hope the info helps you..and good luck! :)

my wife had a herniated umbilical (hole instead of a belly button) until she had surgery to close it. quite simply the Dr will bring the two edges together and stitch them so the hole is closed. additionally, if the hole extends into the stomach cavity, he will use the closing of the deeper sections with sewing it up before final closure. it may take several days before your girl can leave the hospital, but techniques then and now are similar. my wife has a scar and no belly button, but one could have been put in. it would have been artificial (plastic) but it didn't matter as it would have been cosmetic and is a matter of choice, since it serves no purpose once born.

My son had that surgery at 4 months...so he was much younger...but recovery was pretty simple. It's a simple procedure and from what I was told, it's better to take care of it or else there are greater risks down the line. She will be fine...maybe you can call the office ahead of time and ask them what you can expect as far as recovery. Best wishes.

Leave it out in the woods and have another. It doesn't cost a dime, and you feel good knowing you've furthered natural selection and a wolves life.

My son had it done at 5 years of age because it never closed from birth. He didn't seem to be bothered by it at all.
