Because it isn't possible to manufacture a dry food without some grains. The meat wouldn't keep very long either.
You can get good dry foods like Natural Balance and CA Natural that only have one meat source and one grain source. I use both of those with my guys. Fish isn't all that great for cats either. Beef causes upchucksville around my ranch.
I also feed a raw meat diet of chicken and turkey. Not mixed together. Chicken for dinner or turkey for dinner. The raw meat is mixed with a certain proportion of liver and heart. I use a supplement powder to make the "meatloaf". It contains calcium, psyllium husk, egg yolk and then a salmon capsule is mixed in.
I went to raw food because that way you truly know what your cat is eating and you have control over the quality of ingredients.
Cooking any meat destroys some essential amino acids that the cat can't produce on its own. Humans and dogs can so their meat can be cooked.
There is a Yahoo group called Holisticat and one called FelineFuture and most people there feed a raw diet or are interested in doing so. Check 'em out. Different people do it different ways. Some add vegetables -- I never have. It takes time and commitment. One lady and her husband posted some pictures and directions for making their raw mixture for 20 CATS.
That's a REAL commitment!

I feed my cats "Evolve" brand. They were all having skin issues and were vomiting alot so I went to the pet store and found a really informed employee who recommended this brand. It only uses human consumption grade ingredients, no by-products or animal digest. My cats love it, the vomiting stopped and they seem generally healthier. When I can't get to the store that sells Evolve I use "Nutro- natural choice." Now my biggest problem is weight gain. My kitties don't like the Evolve lite formula. Also- it is better to feed your cats wet food than dry, because that more closely mirrors their natural diet. The best thing you can give them is a homemade meal, or Spot's Stew.
This is from Evolves web site:
Similar to Evolve Dog Food, Evolve Natural Cat Food provides a healthy, balanced nutritious diet that meets the individualized life-stage of your cat and is available in canned and dry formulas. Evolve Dry Cat Formula is all natural with USDA approved chicken, kelp, cranberries, blueberries and an array of other wholesome ingredients. It does not contain any by-products or animal digest and is naturally preserved. Whether you choose Evolve Kitten, Adult Maintenance or Senior/Lite Formula, you can be certain that your cat will receive the nutrients necessary for proper growth and development

Checkwith your vet and find the best 100 % nutrionally complete diet you can without so many fillers.
I also highly recommend Feline Missing Link, found online or at your vet...its a broad spectrum supplement that supports their usual diet with every other possible thing they need.
My dogs, horse & cat have been on it for almost a year now & the differences in their helth are amazing, skin issues went away, allergies went away, coats became sleek and shinier than we'd ever seen!
our 15 yr old dog is spunkier now than she was 4 yrs ago. I just wish Id know about it years ago--I could have added YEARS to my pets lives...
its worth every penny.
do all the research you can and keep up to date on things, you will do fine, and rem. to give cooked fish etc treats and catnip to your kitty along w/a well balanced diet and you should be just fine:)
glad you are so concerned with your kitty, it shows you care!
most people just done know the crap thats in the food they feed, but most cats do fine on i it anyway--it just cuts off yrs of their average life span and causes vet bills later on that could be prevented if they had been fed properly to begin with.

There are a lot of the same products at PetSmart or PetCo like there is at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or the grocery store. Yes, PetSmart and PetCo will have different brands than the others but overall there isn't much different.
If you are really concerned about the right food talk to your vet or several vets. At any rate, any cat food that is advertised is ok.

It doesn't hurt cats to eat fillers in their food as long as the majority is protein. They cannot survive without protein but they can eat other things. Cat food would be very expensive if they didn't have some fillers in them.. Alot of us have more than one cat.

there are three high quality food: pro plan, science diet and royal canin.
and the reason those three are at the top is one reason: they take out so little on the food itself that they are left with alot for advertising.
also those foods cost so little and most people don't consider their cat as their child so they are satisfied in taking out as little as possible on them.
my dog and my cats all eat pro plan, and nothing else.
