i have (belkin) usb adaptor for my desktop but ca,nt get it to connect to my wireless router i get the icon up on my desktop but it will not read the net work

my desktop is on win 2000 my router is setup for my laptop is which is on xp home i can get my key to go unto the desktop ?

You need to setup your IP addresses on both your PC and laptop.Be sure that your router and your usb adapter using the same communication channel. Let both of them get the IP address automatically from their host. let the default Gateway on both of your PC and laptop is your router IP address. Set the workgroup on both of your PC and laptop the same. Turn the file and printer sharing on on both of your PC and laptop if you want to exchange files or if you have shared printer.

You don't say if you're computer is using XP or not of if you're trying to do wireless using a desktop. If you're trying to use a USB adapter to connect using an old PC, it's not going to work. It's not just the connection. The technology and having XP makes a big difference.

Try to reset your router and configure your laptop to be on the same IP address as your wired computer. Make sure you enable security after the network is available.

What wireless router / gateway are you using? Check if wireless broadcast is enable, check if your router/gateway is capable of transmitting wireless signal.

Is the router encryting the traffic? WPA/WEP
If it is, does the Win2k machine support the encryption on the WiFi card/drivers?

Is the USB adapter operating at the same frequency as your wireless router? ie 802.11g or 802.11b
