My daughter was the exact same way. The key was a combination of techniques. One, is not to mention the poo poos. The second is to find his niche. And third is privacy.
I didn't mention poo poos except for once she was on the potty, I would say "go ahead and put your pee pee and poo poos in the potty." When it was time to clean up, I would say, "no poo poos? Maybe we'll try again later". Then I would leave it alone. I had to stop begging and making her sit there, because it would only stress her out and make her hold it, like you pointed out.
When potty training, I gave her M&M's for going pee pee. That didn't work at all for poo poos. So find something that is extremely important to him. My daughter loves wearing dresses. I told her that she could wear a dress when she went poo poos. And when she went poo poos, I would change her into her a dress (or nightgown in the evening).
The privacy, she needed it, because poo poos embarrassed her, but she didn't want me to leave either. So I put her on the potty and told her I was going to put on some socks or put some clothes in the hamper or something and that I would "be right back". Then I would wait outside the door for a couple of minutes. In that couple of minutes, that's when she would go.
After about 1 1/2 months of no results, when I changed strategies, it took about 2 weeks of consistently putting her poo poos in the potty. Good luck!

Just keep trying. When you think he is about to go put him on, if he happens to go on the potty (even if by accident just cause he couldnt hold it anymore) make the biggest deal out of it! Let him know what a big boy he is, just go overboard.
Until then, I would take his poopy diaper (or pull up) and take him with you while you dump it into the toilet. While you are doing that tell him we poop in the potty.
That is what I did to get my daughter to go poo on the toilet. She had been urine trained since she was 26 months old but would not go poo. That was what the doc told us to do and it took her about 3 weeks but it happened! Good luck!

Boys are slightly harder than girls to potty train. They will do fine with peeing but not on going with a bowel movement. Take it easy mom. Have you seen a normal adult with feces in their pants? He will get it, be patient. I know at times it is hard to be patient, do you have a pre-school. If you do tell him he can't go to school until he quits. You may be surprised at what happens. Also he may be having trouble controlling his bowel muscles which is a good indication he does not know when he is asleep that he is having a bowel movement. They will increase in strength as he gets a little older. As far as the constipation goes he is getting a psychological problem from this. He does not want to go in his pants so he will hold it. Some children see this as an extension of themselves and you are flushing it away. Talk to him and encourage him. No scolding that is just throwing gas on the flame.

My experiences with my son had been a nightmare and he's 14 now so i'm going to try to keep in mind how. It took him a very long time to get it. I just comprehend he was once potty knowledgeable with the aid of four years old but nonetheless peed the bed til he was about 10. Anyone once informed me that their physique has to be mature sufficient to do it and so they must want to use the potty. Blissful those days are at the back of me. I do not forget leaving the diaper off and him carrying tremendous boy undies. I took him to decide upon out cool undies. He went on the potty but there have been still accidents on my ground. THere was a good publication and video I obtained from toys r us. It was once referred to as once upon a potty. He loved that video. It helped alot. There's one for a boy and one for a girl. Both my children cherished it. My daughter was potty informed with the aid of 18 months. Ladies are more mature from what I heard. On the age my son is now, i know that he is only a late bloomer for the whole lot. The whole thing. I do not fear anymore. Just have lots of persistence and take into account not to examine him with different boys. Each little one is distinct. Oh, I simply remembered, I additionally carried a potty in my van. Alot of locations you go to shouldn't have lavatories and when he has to go just take him to your car. It used to be a god send to have that potty. When he has to move, you pull over and put him on the pot. Best advice my sister ever gave me. Excellent good fortune and have enjoyable making reminiscences.

Perhaps he is suffering from constipation which would make passing a stool uncomfortable if not down right painful - i would suggest a visit to the GP, or adding more fibre to his diet such as bananas and all-bran.
If he has taken a dislike to poo-ing, then it would make sense that he will poo in his sleep, when he has no conscious control his body will release what needs to be released. If he is not soiling himself, then he has control over his bowel movement, unfortunately he is controlling Not poo-ing.
I would try a reward system, the usual star chart and prizes - but include the whole family so that he sees that its not just him with this messy business - if he tells u he needs a poo give him a star. if u or ure husband DO a poo - give ureselves a star - this might let him see that he doesnt need to be scared cos mummy and daddy do it too.
I hope this helps.

When he's ready he'll do it...we had similar issues. BOTH of our guys (twins) did just what you're describing...then one day one of them decided to try on the potty and within minutes the other one did...and we've never looked back.
I swear, potty training is the hardest thing in the world, but I really believe now that they'll do it when they're ready and pushing to soon with only hamper the experience for everyone!

it sounds like hes associated the potty with peeing but still thinks the pull ups are for poo's so hes waiting till he has them on, probably because he hasnt done a poo in the potty yet, maybe you should tell him its good to do a poo in the potty or even the toilet so he has somewhere different to associate, but try leaving him on the potty longer and giving him something to occupy himself, and keep asking if hes been a big boy for mummy and done a poo in the potty /toilet, as you know if he does plenty of praise and less of the pull ups, if at all.. seems like he has good control already....

Try putting a pull up on him then putting him on the potty while he has it on. Then let him see you take it off and empty it into the toilet. Wipe him and let him see you put in into the toilet so that he knows that that is where his poop goes. I know it sounds gross, but letting him see you or your husband or a sibling go poop in the potty might help. Example is the best teacher.
