Your dog should have started at the vet immediately after you got her for an evaluation and puppy shots. Your dog needs a Rabi shot desperately! (If your vet can't tell you what shots she needs then you need another vet.) she needs the works. I suggest you gather a fresh stool sample as soon as possible before her appt. so that she can be checked for intestinal parasites. She will need a blood test to check for heart worms before preventative medication can be given. She will also need standard physical exam too. Your vet will notify you by mail when future vaccination are due. Along with rabies, she should be vaccinated for Canine Distemper, hepatitis,Parainfluenza parvovirus and Leptospira bacterin. This all in one shot and she should receive a booster yearly. The rabies is usually every three years and she will receive a metal tag for her collar. This is for her protection in case she should bite someone. If it can't be proved that she is free of rabies, she will be beheaded to test for the virus. Also it will keep the victim from having to under go rabies treatment. You will also be provided with written proof of her vaccinations. Put it in a safe place in case you need it. Good luck with your dog. Protect her and an enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Depending upon how old the dog was when it got it's last DHLPP vaccine. If it was 16 weeks of age and had 2 within 3 weeks apart then it will only need one booster. If it was younger then it will need a dhlpp or dhpp depending upon the vets proticol then another one in 2-3 weeks. Then one a year after that. Rabies is given different in each state. Some do it every year while others recognize it for 3 years. Why do you say the dog could be ill? What are you not sure about? You say you know about heartworms so I hope the dog is on heartworm preventative. If not get it occult tested and start it right away. A good flea control is in order as well. Frontline or Advantage.

If your dog is acting normal right now then don't panic. Write your questions down and ask the vet. Your vet will be able to help you decide what is most important for your dog as far as shots and medicine. Normally you will only take your dog to the vet for yearly shots and if it gets sick or hurt. Again, your Vet should be able to help you out there too.

You should to take her in *at least* once a year for shots, heartworm test, and a check-up.

If she has only had one set of shots, she is probably behind. She may yet need more puppy boosters. Your vet should happily give you a schedule of essential vaccinations, and be able to tell you what she needs at this stage.

(Now would also be a good time to get her spayed, if she is not presently in heat.)

Your dog should go to the vet for a checkup yearly. You can discuss with your vet the vaccine regiment they use. Some vets have gone to every other year while some still suggest you have the dog vaccinated every year.

Just tell the vet what you told us he will know exactly what to give them. I would take it to the vet every six months need it or not just to check up, and immediately if you notice any thing unusual. If it starts not eating or getting dehydrated, and has a funny smell on its fur--this is a sure sign of parvo--take to the vet immediately

You should take your dog to the vet once a year. Your dog should get rabies, parvovirus, lyme disease and distemper. You also need the dog tested for heartworm, parvo, and HIV.
