This question has many possible answers. The most common reasons that icon disappears include:
-See if there is a little < indicator on the edge of the system tray. If so, press it and see if the battery indicator is there.
-Over an empty spot on the taskbar, right click and select PROPERTIES. Then click the CUSTOMIZE button on the lower right. This opens another box titled CUSTOMIZE NOTIFICATIONS. Scroll through that box and change your preferences for each item in the list. Some of them you want to choose ALWAYS SHOW, others you may choose NEVER SHOW, and others may show HIDE WHEN INACTIVE. Once you finish with your selections, click the OK button to close that box, and the OK button to close the TASKBAR AND START MENU PROPERTIES box.
-On your desktop screen, right click over an empty area and click on PROPERTIES near the bottom. Now click the tab for SCREEN SAVER, and then click the “POWER” button on the bottom of that box. This opens the POWER OPTIONS PROPERTIES box where you need to click the ADVANCED tab. If you want the icon to show in the system tray all of the time, check the box under OPTIONS for ALWAYS SHOW ICON ON THE TASKBAR. If you prefer not to see the icon, uncheck that box. Click on the OK button on the bottom of the box to put the changes into effect. (You may reach the POWER OPTIONS PROPERTIES box through your Control Panel as well.)
-Some computers do not display an icon for the battery when you connect your computer to an A/C source.
Good Luck!!!

If you have your laptop plugged into a power outlet then on most computers the battery icon is not there because the machine is running off AC power and not battery power.
If it is plugged into a power outlet, unplug it and you should see your battery icon.
