i've researched self defense many times over the internet and people say that BJJ or Muay Thai is the best type. But, what if the person who is trying to assualt you/rape you knows BJJ?

This is purely hypothetical but it could easily happen. Not only would you be helpless if the attacker got you to the ground, the person would be able to get you into all sorts of nasty positions...

Fantasy Girl: From what I've read on various forums, Aikido is well.. useless against BJJ since BJJ is so strong from being used in UFC and all. Aikido could possibly work on a normal person but against a BJJ master I don't think a person would last long.

Lots of good answers here. Knee to the groin, eye jabs, elbow to the head. Head-butt to the nose. The tip of the elbow is the second hardest bone in the body. The hardest is the cranium. Punch or chop to the throat. Depending on how far the altercation went, if the opportunity presented itself, grab the scrotum and SQUEEZE with everything you can muster. If it got to the point where one was forced into doggy position, that probably wouldn't be an option.(But the opportunity for a reverse head-butt might present itself). When you're life might be on the line, there is no such thing as a cheap shot!! Even if the person trying to assault/rape does know some type of ground fighting, they are still going to have to leave an opening sometime. (IE: when they're trying to rip your clothes off).
Rape is a crime of violence, and rapist often (though not always) look for victims they think they can easily subdue. Though it's unlikely a highly skilled martial artist would do something that despicable, there ARE bad apples in all walks of life.

Not in most states. Many consider them illegal to own and most consider them used in any physical altercation to be assault with a deadly weapon. You also have to consider the fact that brass knuckes hurt you about as bad as they hurt the other guy when you use them. It's real easy to break your fingers and knuckles punching someone with these kind of weapons. If you really want self defense try tabasco sauce. I know it sounds silly but if you know you're going to have a problem rub a good amount in your hand beforehand (like handwash) then wipe your hands over the guys eyes. Even in small quantities this stuff will do the trick and can take down 2 or 3 people if you're quick and smart plus it doesen't count as a weapon if used in self defense. I used this as a teenager against some bullys and found it effective but be careful to keep your hands away from your eyes untill you've washed them thouroughly with soap afterwards.

pressure points, strikes to the neck, chokes and groin would work

Choking the guy would be hard if he knew BJJ, but if your quick it could be unexpected. The guy thats doing this wouldnt think about BJJ right off the bat. If u just go bam and hold as hard as u can with a good grip u can choke him out and when he wakes up the cops will be around him, or if u want i guess you can kill him?

Neck strikes, can kill him, or cut of his breathing for about 90-100 secounds. Most likely it wont kill him but its possible. U need to hit hard enough to close the windpipe, which should be pretty easy if you are hitting as hard as u can.

I have learned how to do pressure points, and even a female can break a guy's arm or wrist. That would stop the guy, if he doesnt stop attacking you, break his other, so he cant do ****. lol. very painful and effective, cop hold is effective, practice with friends and do it light, see the feedback.

getting hit in the groin can make a guy freeze, most painful thing i have ever experienced, worse then getting cut with a blade!

I read the other post and i agree with. answer #1 thats about it, everything else is pretty much funny useless crap. Pepper Spray may work but ive seen people resist it before. And if you hit the guy in the face probably will make him start hitting you back. If you go for eyes it just might make him more pissed. I dont advise carrying a knife around or a gun because thats too much, and that makes you harmful to everyone and you probably wont be able to use it on a person unless it was in your pocket. thats why i only agree with answer one.

Your right If a guy knew BJJ, akkido is useless, i think its useless anyways. But if u are serious about going all the way, do karate or kung fu. Those are good for women. Its more fluid. i suggest Goju karate or other non american karate's, they show how to defend getting attacked from the back, or wrist grabs. Go see if any of those kind of places are in your town, and i bet they will give you a free first day. Hard to explain but trust me. Taekwon Doe is useless its mostly just sport. Akkido is useless too slow and weak. Kenpo is usually americanized fakeness but it can be good, same with Kempo it can be really good or bad. Muay Thai is good but useless for female vs male.

Try Karate 1st, try to get okinawan by far the best, like goju thats what i did.
Try Kung Fu 2nd, try to get a good instructor that isnt americanized.
Try Kempo or Kenpo 3rd. Can be good can be bad. give it a try if nowhere else.

If u go and any of these places are americanized it is pretty much useless for real life, most for sport. I fought americanized people and they try to kick me and i just beat the tar out of them, stick to the real stuff, back then when their was only swords and no guns, they actually used this stuff, and perfected it.

Hope this sounds right because it would work.

You people kill me. Just because it has so much publicity doesn't mean that BJJ is the end-all be-all of martial arts. A fighter of any style can win over BJJ if that person is the better fighter. It isn't the style, its the fighter! BJJ has been successful because the Gracies have been great fighters, but that doesn't mean that every BJJ practitioner is as good as the Gracies.

All martial arts styles have their strenghts and weaknesses, so it's really down to the person who can better use their style's and their personal strengths to exploit their opponent's style's and personal weaknesses. The better fighter wins.

My advice, if you take out a rapists eyes, then he is probably disinclined to continue his assault and then you go into your best run-fu technique and get the police.

jujitsu or kung fu. Look for a martial arts with literal breaking. Cause a BJJ Brazilian jujitsu and or mauy Thai kick boxer can't do there skills if there tools are wrecked. And the reason i say those to is yo learn to break things so fast and accurately through training. Not only that Brazilian jujitsu is a joke compared to real jujitsu. There conditioning is 1000 times more strenuous than BJJ. And muay Thai is easy when your fighting American muay Thai fighters cause they really don't know how to do muay Thai. That's why i laugh when i see these morons here say its the best they don't know the phases or the stances just that a big elbow hurts. all you need to know to beat a muay Thai fighter is how to take them down at the legs and any jujitsu practitioner or kung fu artist can take down any ones legs with ease. But as i pointed to for earlier you need to know a martial art that has really fast really brutal breaks. Aikido is kinda like that but its soft to soft to stop some big knuckle head that knows BJJ and muay Thai.

i'd love to make you feel better, but i'll be BRUTALLY honest. unless your bjj skills are much, much, much better than his, you might as well enjoy the rape. i'm not even kidding.

close up, it's the bjjer's game. there have been many ma'ists who cant do anything when they're on the ground. a groin strike won't cut it... if it works for you it would have worked for the kf master that got whooped by royce gracie in a literally anything goes match.

and my philosophy about groin strikes... they will only work to piss psychos off. he will probably return the favor before raping you.

yea, so practice bjj every single day, learn other ma's, and hope it doesn't happen.

ps krav maga in the us is very watered down many a time.

that is a touchy situation.. i see what you're saying, not ever bad guy out there is a bumbling idiot, some can be trained and all the more dangerous..

in my opinion, the best self defense for men and women i feel has to be krav maga, israeli fighting system.. Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States. Krav Maga is a simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios. it has great gross motor techniques that are easy to learn and easy to remember. nothing intriqute, all moves are simple and comprehensible. there are great equalizers, such as knees to the groin, elbows, clawing, plucks, etc..

learn from an instructor in your area: http://www.kravmaga.com/
or
buy a video and learn at home: http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&categoryId=13941&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=13756&crumb=13501-13753

but as in any self defense senerio, remember to use your common sense, you gut.. if you feel uncomfortable, try to avoid the situation, better safe than sorry. park in well lit areas at night, if you feel someone's following you to your vehicle or on the street make your way quickly to a public area, remember rapists want discression and anonimity, bring attention to the situation, yell fire, police, etc. let them know they've been made and you're not going quietly.. remember where rape is concerned there are always to crime scenes, the abduction and the act itself. you have to think in terms of life or death, you can't wait quietly because there's no guarantee that your rapist will let you live, fight to the death, let them know you're not going to be an easy victim, because that's what they're looking for. always be aware of your surroundings, look up and around you at people and your surroundings when you go anywhere, try not to get distracted, look down, don't give the impression that you're submissive, or mousy, walk with confidence and authority. these are just some common sense things that you should always keep in mind.. don't be a victim!

good luck!

The best self defense is always being aware of the enviroment you are in. Never put yourself in a dangerous situation.

I do know BJJ. One time I was sparring with my instructor, and I put him in a comprimising situation. I was suprised, because at the time I was a beginner. I soon felt a tapping on my side...he was tapping me with a sparring knife.

The moral of the story...if you feel you need protection, carry the biggest weapon you feel comfortable using.

If you know you can absolutely shoot someone who is attacking you, carry a gun.

If you feel you can't shoot someone, carry mace or pepper spray.

Again, let me restate, the best self defense is being aware of where you are, and the dangers there.

Generaly, Rape is perfomed in Full gaurd position, except Doggy style.

In full gaurd, it's possible to use triagle choke and we can change to arm bar (We see this often in MMA, such as Antonio Hodotico Nogehira, and other ground fighter.)

And there's lot a more technique to use.
For example , low key lock(AKA Kimura) can be used.

We can change Kimura to One hand holding(it's Akido tech, it use arm's motion range limitation to break the opponent's arm. Even Kid can break adult's arm using this tech.)

If you are in Half gard position and positioned in bottom, there's way to break opponent's leg(Chal-ri -man-ta: it's Akido tech.)

I think Akido is best for that.
Because Akido teaches many banned tech.

Submission in BJJ is from Judo mostly.
(Actually, it's from Jit-Jut-Su, but BJJ is very differ from Japanese JJS, For example, No-Gi is totally different from Japenses JJS.
Because Janese JJS contains many tech that use Cloth a lot.)

And, In Judo , there are many restriction for safty reason.
For example, In judo, you can not hold opponent's arm with 2 hands for certain amount of time (I think it's 10 second.).
ANd Gilotin Choke(Front Head Lock ) can not be used in Judo.

However , Japanese Akido teaches all of prohibited tech.
For that reason, Akido does not really do the sparring.

Such as
How to attack eye effectivley,
How to knee to the groin effectly

all the tech that were considred as dirty trick are studied in Akido
Traditionaly as Self -depense tech.

(I recommend Tea-Dong-Ryu Akido.)

Just remember to sing (solar plexis, insept {of foot}, nose and groin) i saw this on miss congeniality and it really is true. though it was just another chick flick this is a vaild piece of advice for green horns in martial arts. oh and another good piece of advice are, keep peper spay handy, never walk by your self (espically in dark areas in low populated areas), have the cops speed dial, run when need be, and all ways keep a look out for these guys. truth be told its a very unsecure person that would do this type of thing. a person who is fullfilled in something like the martial arts probably won't attack you but these are some good pieces of advice.
