Ladies formal apparel. If the dress or 2 piece outfit is fancy enough it need not reach the floor, however, personally i think that ankle length should be the highest. Splits on side(s) allow free lower limb movement on your part (besides feeling ultra wonderful on your bare legs) The fabric flowing behind and around a woman is absolutely poetic to observe in motion. Your tastes may run to a straight skirt or plainer garb which can be elegant in its very simplicity...in this case wear lots of jewellery appropriately, unless you prefer to remain elegantly understated. Having said the above you can wear skirt/dress at the knee or just below (Audrey Hepburnish) ... above the knee may be construed as too sexy and inappropriate for that particular function. Above knee is for cocktail parties and night clubs. Finally, formal female wear is generally long in the skirt though it remains your choice. You need not spend $5oo.00 on a new outfit...there are moderately priced beautiful evening wear dresses, etc. available everywhere these days. Want to be original? Purchase your dress then add or delete elements of the design to make it your own style. Buy plain and add some sparkling beads or sequins, not a lot, just some for effect or... For instance, add a sheer flowing fabric as a visible underskirt or place it on top instead as an overskirt...or purchase gossamer fabric at your local fabric shoppe, hem the ends and use as shawl. Very feminine and alluring too. Comes in handy for around the shoulders, to ward off an evening chill or to protect yourself from excessive solar energy; or to place on an outdoor bench to protect your gown when sitting with that special someone to utter sweet nothings to whilst gazing at the moon and stars. Have a lot of fun whilst remaining tasteful for your age group and the actual function itself. Oh yes, very fancy open toes high-heeled sandals are a must & a tiny tasteful handbag. Let us know how you did!!! Oh yes, you can procure a skirt (for instance) in one shoppe and purchase the upper part in another...good old mix and match

Both of those events are like high school prom. You want a formal gown, typically floor length. If you are young and feel like you can wear one of those knee length gowns that are very fancy (typically designer), go ahead. Otherwise, I'd say definitely something rather formal and floor-length. Black is always a good color to blend into the background if you aren't sure which dress to wear.
