Since HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, scientists have been trying to determine where HIV came from. HIV is a descendant of SIV, the immunodeficiency virus found in monkeys, most notably chimpanzees. At some point, the virus crossed species. The evidence points to Africa as being the place where the viral transfer, called "zoonosis," first happened. But there are a lot of theories as to how the virus actually transferred from simians to humans. The most commonly accepted theory is the "hunter" theory, where humans killed and ate infected chimps. At some point, the virus mutated into a slightly different strain and became HIV. There are other theories, too, which you can read about at the link below, if you want.

Scientists were doing human testing for a cure for polio (i think it was polio) in Africa. One of the scientists was using chimps which carried the disease (a strain of the HIV virus), this infected the Africans they were doing the testing on. It spread from there on.
