I live in Mexico, I have 2 jobs. I work as an English college professor, and as a full time medical document translator. I live in the border with Texas. I owe both jobs to having had earned English. I never went to an English school, I just watched PBS since I was a boy; border towns get American channels. I volunteered to help with the phone on the next PBS local fund raising, but everyone is telling I'm running the risk of loosing my Border Crosser for that. As far as I know, it's not work, so it shouldn't be a problem, but everyone keeps telling me this is the kind of insignificant thing custom agents are taking away one's Border Crosser for.
Should I cancel my volunteering?

Why don't you contact INS here and check the laws regarding a Mexican citizen volunteering in the US...Good luck and keep up the work, wish we had more citizens like you....

Check with immigration. I don't think you would lose it for that, since it's not work. Also, you should contact whatever point person is handling volunteers with the PBS affiliate you're volunteering with and see what they say. Maybe this isn't the first time someone has done this.

Why would you lose your border crossing? People on border town cross all the time back and forth for shopping jobs and what not. I would certainly ask someone about this. It doesn't sound right to me. My brother lives in Detroit and works in Canada....they go back and forth all the time.

i would certainly hope this wouldn't be a problem, but i would check with immigration first, it would be horrible to get busted for doing a good deed because of a misunderstanding. good luck
