If you do go with the party at home idea after all the usual party games kids love get a huge bag of modelling balloons and just tip the lot out for them(pre inflated) to see what they can make. we did that at my daughters sixth birthday and the kids loved it!

I have a 5 year old son and I talk to him about his party well in advance and let him help choose the theme and trinkets for the goodie bags. Is there a city/town park near you? Several times we have had parties at a local park that has a train, small ferris wheel, small carousel, playground, miniature golf and even duck to feed. There are also places springing up all over that have the giant inflatables (slides, bounce houses, obsticle coures, etc.) indoors. The kids love that. For the outdoor parties we usually go ahead and make it a cook out with burgers and hot dogs, for the indoor parties, it usually just cake and ice cream.

Some other ideas are a paint your own pottery party, little girls love this, or a tea party with bears. "Build a bear", but that's more expensive so you might want to wait a year or two. Some parks have special pavillions too and rides and people to run the party.
Then you don't need to clean up the mess at home when the kids leave!

Invite fewer people but do something more special.
Try getting hold of some colourful beads and some elastic - invite the girls to make their own jewelery. Sitting down is bound to be less hot. Paint faces, run a special theme like fairies or butterflies and do finger food to match.
Don't try to make it too long - a couple of hours is plenty. Perhaps run it later afternoon or morning when it's cooler.

McDonald's or the bowling alley? My nephew, who just turned five, had a party with his friends and relatives at the bowling alley. They had a great time, ordered a few pizzas and nachos, and afterwards all the kids signed a bowling pin that he got to take home. He loved it!

Try renting a recreation/party room at the park and putting up cotton candy machines, snowcone machines and hiring face painting people and clowns. You could also put one of those castle jumpers nearby.

Check out orientaltrading.com. They have a whole section for birthday parties and themes. If your daughter likes butterflies, or princess stuff, or spongebob they have everything you could think of for whatever theme you choose. Ask your daughter what she would like, after all it is her party.

Get someone to come over and do a beaded jewelry party for little girls. Just invite a handful of girls and let them learn to make their own little jewelry. I had one for my daughter but I did it myself (the teaching that is) THey had fun creating for hours and who know you may have just given one her career path for the future. Good Luck
