Does anyone have any data on whether soft drinks are harmful. I realize about the dangers of a lot of sugar. But what about the other ingredients. Are they dangerous to a person's long term health?

I guess I should have clarified better. Besides the sugar and sugar related products such as corn syrup, what about the other ingredients. Are there long term effects to ingesting those ingredients?

Sugar is okay. It's the high fructose corn syrup that is suspected by many nutritionalists to be a contributory culprit to the rising rates of obesity.

Table sugar (sucrose) and even fruit contain a combination of fructose and glucose. High fructose corn syrup is also a combination of the two yet can have a much higher ratio of fructose than other naturally occuring sweeteners.

Fructose does not stimulate production of hormones which control appetite. Therefore, large amount of fructose do not leave you feeling full the way large amounts of glucose do.

Further, glucose can be "processed" by every cell in the body. Fructose can only be processed by the liver. Processing large amounts of fructose can lead to liver damage among other organ disfunctions.

I suggest that you do a search on Google for High Fructose Corn Syrup and see what kind of information is returned. You can draw many of your own conclusions.

They aren't really dangerous as far as chemicals are concerned, but the high level of empty calories can cause major weight gain...and that's bad.
