It's more than possible that the other posters are right about your accent being goofy. But the point you make is a really good one. If you don't speak English as your native language, people may think that just because you can't communicate well, you must be a little bit stupid. I am not sure it is racist tho. If a white European guy doesn't speak English well, there are people who will treat him as tho he is a dope. And I have had the experience of trying to speak other languages (poorly) and been treated as tho I was a very simple minded person. It's unfortunate, but is something that immigrants around the world have to deal with.

You probably aren't as good at faking an accent as you think you are. It's not so much racism as people being surprised to hear an accent that they don't expect to hear coming out of your mouth. What accent are you faking? I'd say it's because your fake accent probably stinks.

It is probably that your accent sounds fake and that it is hard to take you seriously if you sound fake, it is better to sound like yourself then at least people understand you have an accent and people might ask about it but it doesn't mean it's racist just that people are interested in you.

If you fake an accent, then you aren't being discriminated against. People just don't like being liked to. Fakers are liars, and that's no way to convey any idea or issue in which you want to be taken seriously.

People can generally tell when you're faking an accent, and if you're doing something that dumb, of course they're going to treat you like a dumb kid. It's not racism that's involved, it's people's annoyance at you faking something about who you are.

What accent do you fake? Unaccented American English or Chinese-Accented English or American-Accented Mandarin?

Is it racism or are your words less clear.

What is the point of faking an accent? In Peru there was this guy who was pertending to be Irish but then his accent went away...I thought he was weird.

If your faking it, then course your gonna get taken less seriously, its usually pretty obvious when someone fakes an accent unless they really really really good at it.

When I try to imitate an accent people fall about laughing (because I'm so hopeless at it) - it's called 'teasing' and it's part of normal social interaction. Loosen up!

Maybe they are not falling for your fake accent and that is why they do not take you seriously.
