You need to take family leave. It's neither short nor long term disability, and you do not need to have sick time or PTO to cover it. You may, however, only take 6 weeks (at least in CA) in any calendar year. It is payed however similarly to short-term disability(based on an average of previous work history)-paid weekly and it is tax free. I needed to use this benefit about two years ago when my daughter was very ill with asthma/pneumonia. Check with your HR department for details (I'm not sure if benefits vary state to state)

Check out the family leave disability act. This law was put in place so that you won't lose your job while caring for a sick family member. Usually, short or long term disability won't cover your child unless it is company policy or part of your insurance plan.

That is not likely to cover this since it is a policy on you and not your child. However, if your child is truly extremely sick, they may qualify for social security disability. It is a big pain in the butt to get and you have to be low income and low resources (your family cannot have more than $5000 worth of assets not including one car and your house) However, if you qualify, it is very handy to replace some of the income you would be earning if you didn't have to take off work to care for you child!

Not usually unless you have a dependent STD or LTD plan. The regular plans offered by your company are almost always for the employee ONLY unless it says otherwise. Check your Summary Plan Document or ask your benefits department.

What IS avaialable to you may be FMLA leave which you can take to care for a sick relative. If you meet the requirements, you can take a certain amount of paid/unpaid leave (depends on your company's policy again) and your job is protected for a certain amount of time meaning you can come back to the company within that time and they have to have your job or an equivalent one waiting for you.

Nothing. Short and Long term disability covers the event that YOU get injured and are unable to work.

If the STD or LTd policy is your policy, then it only covers if you are sick.

If your child gets sick and you need to take off from work, you may be able to do so under FMLA. But it won't be paid unless you have vacation and/or sick time available.
