Well because it shows us how life was back than and how it's going to be in the near future. The Bible has good things in it too like everlasting life and living eternally in Heaven with God and the son of man, Jesus. The Bible is a mystery, it's a story waiting to be told. It may be confusing that's why before you start reading, pray to God and ask him to help you understand the Bible and go to bible studies at a local church that can really help you understand.

...because it's the record of what a mess humans make on their own without letting God be in charge. He made us, and He wants us to know Him - the record of how to do this is contained in His book! Start with investigating who Jesus claimed to be - do you think he is who he said he was? Did he ever lie? If not, maybe you should look into it more. He is either who he claimed to be, or he was delusional or extremely evil. As the last two don't seem to be valid under any tests, that only leaves the first option, doesn't it? Don't take anyone elses word for it - check it out for yourself. If God is right, He's perfectly able to stand up to all questioning by mere mortals!!
The Gospel of John or Mark is a good place to start.

There are bad, confusing things in all religious texts that claim to be the final word. People claim they are written by man, inspired by God. If that's so it's no God I'd want to believe in!!! Indigenous cultures survived for thousands of years with only oral traditions being passed down and for the most part lived in harmony with each other as well as their natural environment. I have Pagan friends who follow no set doctrine or written text and it's great to converse with people who are so open to various ideas.

Your statement is self-contradictory: if you don't understand something, how do you know it is bad?
If Lincoln was confused that is justification for you too?
Maybe you should expend your energy trying to understand and know that which you are attacking so people will have more respect for your 'opinion.'

Because God (if there is one) couldn't spare us the pain as well as the joy that life has to offer. If I were you I'd dump the Bible and read something else. Since you seem to be questioning faith than I urge you to explore the Uncommon Denomination because we don't put much stock in the Bible...Check us out at WWW.UUA.ORG. PEACE!

The bible is like a history book with short stories bad once like you say, BUT all the bad things it talks about they always have a victories ending. It just comes to show you that no matter how bad life is, with faith everithing bad can always come to good. Good always wins over evil. if you have faith.

Consider reading a commentary on those portion of the bible that trouble you. Email me a verse and I'll give you a "for instance" why.
Often the reason is historical context.

You're on the right track. But make sure you understand all of its nonsense before you completely toss it. To disregard something because you don't understand it is a mistake. To disregard it because you DO understand it... is quite worthwhile...
