Degenerative disk problems are common in dachunds. Please, at least phone your local shelter for some advice on how to proceed.

I had a cat that this happened to once. We concluded that something probably fell on him and paralyzed his back legs. I am so sorry if that really upsets you. I don't want to sugar coat it though. I loved my kitty dearly! He was the best!! But unfortunately we too did not have the money to have him operated on and the operation probably would not have helped him anyway. (Per veterinary consultation at the Humane Society Clinic in our area) We had him put down. I have heard from other daushsand owners that this is a pretty common problem with dauchsands. It is a genetic defect in the breed. They cannot be fixed, I don't think or at least not cheaply fixed. All the people I know with this same problem either build their own little wheel chairs or buy a little wheel chair. The doggies can still lead very happy little lives!! I don't know of any websites to guide you to for examples of these wheeled legs for dogs, but just try typing in "dog wheel chairs" or something like that. Can your sweet doggie still go to the bathroom in this condition? That is extremely important first of all!! You have to help him go if he cannot do it alone or he will die! Do you have a Humane Society Clinic in your area? They are a low cost veterinary clinic. They could probably work out a payment plan for you. At least take doggie in for an examination and talk to a veterinary. It is not really that expensive for an examination and consultation. It is worth the little expense to get an expert's advice. After all, you don't want your little pet to suffer! I hope this has helped you some. I am so sorry for the sadness you are feeling right now.
Don't listen to negative people who are chewing you out. They are rediculous! You are obviously in pain over this and people are insensitive and stupid to chew you out for not having enough finances. Maybe you had enough money when you got your pet and them Mom or Dad or both lost their jobs!! It is not your fault or your parents if you don't have enough money right now. Ignore the stupid comments people may make to you. Just call your Humane Society and explain what is going on and see what they can do to help.

I'm very sorry for your dog. With Dauchsands this is very commen it is called "going down". Did you dog hurt his back at all that you know of? It could be some thing like arthritis. But to know what is realy wrong you would meed to go to the vet. How old is your dog?
We had a shih tzu with a long back and short legs. When he was 5 he jumped off of my moms bed and had no use of his back legs. We took him to a great vet that told us what happened and what to do. He was blind for about the last 2 years of his life.
For more about my shih tzu Teddy go here. http://www.sunnyhillshihtzu.com/teddystory.htm
Also we do have a link to a place called K9 carts that way your dog would still be able to get around.

Dauchsand's are susceptible to a degenerative disc disease. How old is your dog? What it sounds like is his disc is putting pressure on his spinal cord, paralyzing him and causing him immense pain when moved the wrong way. He really needs to be seen by a vet and either treated, or humanely taken care of in another way. He could have this what I just described, or he could have something completely different, but if he's in pain like that, then a vet should really seen him as soon as possible! Goodluck sweetie!

I definatley wouldn't put him to sleep without getting professional advice. Has anyone here heard of MEDICINE? I know it is painful to put a pet to sleep. Even if it takes time to pay off the bill, you should take him to a vet immediatley. It is not fair to let him suffer, because of finances. Take him there ASAP. They can X-ray him, and tell you what is going on. He could have arthritis in his pelvis, but it is most likely a bad back injury. Has your dog ever gotten hit by a car? This is very unlikely since he probably wouldn't be here today, but you should consider that if he has EVER gotten something bad happen to his back, it could have sprung up again, only worse. This sounds like an elderly dog. Be EXTRA careful.
I completely agree with Dione V. Steroids can help if that is the right thing for your pet.

Is he a long backed dog like a dachshund? Often these type of dogs get damage to the disc in their backs and need to be treated by a vet. Is there a humane society in your area that could help you/your parents with the bill of a vet? If this just isn't possible you should make sure the dog gets lots of rest and help to go out side to urinate and defecate and help to get to his food.

How can you have a dog and no money to take the dog to a vet?
The dog is in pain and needs attention!!!! You have to be able to at least afford to have the dog put to sleep. That is the least you can do for him.
You can't just leave the dog in that condition!! You can remind you parents that it is a crime in many states to NOT seek medical attention for a sick or injured pet!!!!!
You got a computer and internet service....hock something so the dog can get relief!!!!!!! Then do not get another pet!!

Dachshunds often have hip problems...I've seen a few in little doggie wheel chairs.....It's the way dachshunds are made that's hard on their back and hips. See what a vet says, explain your situation and maybe they'll help you out....if not, try another vet or contact a rescue group and see if they have any low cost vets they and put you in touch with...Good-luck and give your dog a hug from me !!!

something is wrong with the dogs back or spine. Doxies develop bad backs as they age, they can fracture their spine. The only way to see what is going on, is going to be a vet visit, which will involve an xray. It sounds like your pup is older, and with all that is going on, it may be time to consider putting him down.

This happened with my poodle. I took him to the vet and he said that some of the bone in his back was deteriorating. he said there was a 1 in 10 chance that he would have to have surgery.
he gave me steroids to give my pup and told me alot of times the steroids help the bone fuse together on it's own, but if the bones didn't fuse ,he'd have to do surgery (if i wanted my pup to have a good quality of life) long story short, the steroids worked and it took a little time for my pup to get back to normal.
