Call me mean but all I but for back to school clothes is a new outfit for the first day. They are still wearing shorts up until around October and if I buy a bunch now they outgrow them before really wearing them so we wait and go the end of Sept first of Oct and hit all the big stores and get a lot more because by then the kids need it AND the stores are having bigger sales. This way they aren't outgrowing everything before they need it and I get to save a few dollars as well.

Start out with two weeks worth of clothes. It's best to get mix and match type outfits. Oh and get an extra pair of tennis shoes for gym. I usually buy my daughter a new pair of tennis shoes and have her leave her old ones at school. That should be a good start.

Enough to not have to do laundry for like a week. So 7-8 outfits should be ok.

Girls tend to have very specific requests about their outfits in that case I would get enough for the first week then add on as she tells you what she wants to wear. If you have a boy its easier. 5 pairs of pants and 5 new shirts. if they are in the same color family they can be interchanged endlessly.

I buy what my kids needs. I don't determine the number of outfits in that sense, just what they need.

My son is 7 and I bought 4. But we buy thru the year as he needs them particularly if there's a good sale.

If you can afford two weeks worth, do it!!! You can mix and match your separates where they can probably get away wearing for the first two or three months.
