Patriots...plain and simple. Insurgency is supposedly another term for guerrila war, so if the Yank civilians say attacked enemy columns with NRA supplied shotguns and pistols then yeah you would also be considered as insurgents.
Yet nowdays the terrorists in Iraq (who do the cutting heads, suicide bombings and killing civilians thing which separates terrorism from true freedom fighting) somehow got lobbed in with the real Iraqis who probably just dont like invasion period. Thus people now think that insurgent also means terrorist...which isnt really true.

First of all it's "fought"...Secondly, it is very clear where you are going with this question. The real question should be if people from Canada were coming here and blowing themselves up, would they be patriots or insurgents. After serving in Iraq, I can say that a high majority of violent acts commited there are not done so by Iraqis. They are performed by individuals from other countries, whose objective is to make islam the religion for the world.

I would hope we would be seen as patriots, and that our neighbors to the north (Canada) and south (Mexico) would cross borders to help us. If you are making an analogy to Iraq, there are a few differences. We are a country with freedoms, where attempts to change our government (elections in this case) were not met with mass murder. Iraq was a country living under a dictator. That said, I do not think we should have invaded Iraq. You can't force democracy at the point of a gun. And you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shxt. Let's bring our troops home sooner rather than later.

That depends entirely upon the point of view. To the invaders, we'd be insurgents. To the invadees, we'd be patriots.

Insurgents by the invading country, patriots by the US. Its all based on points of view.
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

Sigh.
"Insurgency", by definition, is an act of revolt or rebellion, launched by people against their OWN government.
In the American War of Independence, WE the Colonists were the insurgents.
Should those wily Canadians invade our northern border, lobbing empty beer bottles and scratchy knit caps, and we were to fight them off, that would be considered homeland defense and THAT is why we have a National Guard garrison in every State. If you'd like to join in such a fight, enlist. If not, any violent acts you decide to commit on your own--short of iron-clad SELF defense--would be considered "vigilantism" and will land you in the stocks for assault and/or murder.
"Patriotism" is merely an affection for and loyalty to ones own nation and is often--as Samuel Johnson said--"The last refuge of scoundrels".

It depends on what side you are on. It's like the old cliche "One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter." I would believe if you are defending the US, you would be a patriot.
