That would be up to the police department you wish to work for they all have different rules.

A clean military record with an honorable discharge will "help" you land a police job. You still will have to pass the background tests, psych tests, polygraph, physical and mental tests plus complete POST (police officer standards & training). Any military training, such as SWAT - will also help, but wont give you a pass. So, yes you still have to be a cop in th "real" civilian world.

Whatever you do, you have to continue your education and go beyond just a high school diploma or GED. A college degree would qualify you for a lot of positions in the military, even officer training. A lot of the Federal law enforcement agencies recruit from the special forces units so I would consider that as well. Not necessarily the military police units unless you end up in a special investigative branch. Just being an MP wouldn't ensure your success in the civilian branches. I would strive for those tougher units, then apply to Feds after you get your college degree. You also want to get top security clearances so don't be doing anything stupid in the mean time!!!!!

If your goal is to join the SWAT team, being in law enforcement in the military will help, but it won't get you there. I have a good friend in Alabama who was able to join the SWAT team, but in addition to his five years of military training and experience he took a bunch of specialty courses that were offered by various state, county, and local police departments. It was all that extra training he took that got him the job. Some courses he was able to get for free, but some he had to pay for out of his own pocket. Keep that in mind if you decide to become an MP.

Positions within the police force is very competitive.
So most likely you would have to join the police department, and then apply to their swat team when there is an opening.
You may be able to but it is harder

negatory(negative)army boy. after your military training, you still gotta be a normal cop for two years till you can volunteer/qualify for SWAT. At least thats the requirements in san diego CA. I checked cuz when i get outta the air force, i may do that same thing.but good luck.

Yes, in fact, the civilian police forces will generally prefer those with military training, especially those who have specialty firearms training. While nothing is guaranteed, you will likely expect preference over non-military.

yes you will get on with police dept but you still have to learn local law codes and other training but you do not go into swat that fast it takes a while to work yourself up to that point, such as law, street patrol, performances and request along with recommondations from that department, just like the military you have to work your way up .

in most states, it is required for all former millitary police officers to take that states required police academy - since laws in civilian life and millitary life differ so much. But, a millitary background would certanly help you in your quest to be a swat officer in civilian life.

Military service will certianly help you should you choose to enter law enforcement afterwards, as far as SWAT goes.. they pick those officers carefully and the requirements are alot more demanding.. if you got what it takes and apply yourself, Im sure you can make it.
good luck!
