Easy answer. The minute any religion claims to be the "one and only way" then hatred begins. People who are devout followers of any religion that denies the validity of others are what causes most of the problems in the world today. And it includes ALL religions...........

Eventually, some people come to the conclusion that the only reason for hardship in the world is that their devotion to literal translation of their holy text is the reason. So, instead of accepting suffering and hardship as normal, they blame other religions and refuse reason in the name of their book. Others then, even if they don't carry these beliefs, are forced to defend themselves. This is a nasty increasing cycle...

And if anyone tries to blame the atheists, I think they need to look around at how the majority of conflicts begin.
