My grandmother has kidney problems and is on dialysis.
She had some complications and has been in the hospital for a month. The doc put her on morphine for a month and she has been hallucinating many things. How long can a person be on morphine? Will this damage her brain?

It won't damage her brain. She can be on it as long as she needs to be. A strong dose of morphine can have these effects on people especially the elderly as their body doesn't remove it as fast as a younger persons would.

Is she on a drip, have a button to give it to herself, is the staff giving her a shot every so often, or does she have pills. If she is self medicating i.e. the button or the pills and she is hallucinating then she is taking to much...a person can be on morphine forever, but the problem is that it is very, very addictive and she will go through withdrawls when they take her off of it...but it should not bother her brain at all...just may be taking too much...

damage no... there are no side effects that permantley affect the brain but because she is on morphine she maybe seeing bugs or other people chasing her that happens in one of every five people the one thing that doctors are worried about when putting someone on morphine is the addiction for it

Ask if she can be put on a morphine pump. Since it delivers a smaller dose, but more often, it will keep her out of pain, but more able to stay alert.
