I didn't know how else to put it. My pups kind of like, dig at their bedding and move it around and then get comfy on it. I also have towels laying around any my pups will do the same thing with the towel, moving it in circles with what i can describe only as "digging" . Why do they do this?

Oh, you bet! My dogs will dig at their bedding for a looong time before it's finally the right "shape" for them to lay down. ;) One of them puts himself in between the dog pillows, like a puppy sandwich, and spins around with the top pillow on his back until the bottom one is the right shape for him. Haha! Then he'll lay there for a few minutes peeking out like a frightened turtle, then decide it's too hot and climb out. Seems like a lot of work for nothing, but it sure keeps him busy for a while!

And then there are the ones who will dig at a flat surface, like a bed sheet or a couch cushion. *snicker* They seem to think they're changing the shape of it, though they never really do.

Anyway, I'd say it's a combination of the old days when they had to make piles of leaves or snow to lay in to stay warm, and the wish to be comfortable! You can't blame them for wanting to be cozy.

Perfectly harmless dog behavior, as long as they aren't digging on your leather sofa...

All the best!

Yes! When she gets in my bed she digs at the sheets. Even when all of them are tucked in and she can't make any wrinkles in them, she still digs for a minute until she lay's down!

Here is a theory I have heard: it scares away snakes in the wild, so its an instinct thigng?

I think it's just an old instinct, like turning around a few times before laying down. My dog digs at the carpet sometimes before she settles in.

Digging in their beds is a natural thing. Before dogs were pets, they did this to "make their Bed"...they dug up the area into a nice soft spot so they could sleep in their "nest" and feel safe. It is "just a dogie thing" so to speak. My little Chi's always dig in their beds before retiring for a nap...I think it is cute. And I think it makes them feel safer. When I see a "lump" in our bed , I know that one of my Chi's is napping under the covers. :)

Yep, mine does too. I always figured she was rearranging it to her liking (thicker under her elbows, thinner by her rear, oriented properly, etc.). If I am not mistaken, dogs in the wild will often dig a nest to sleep in so that they are protected from the elements (out of wind and snow and sun, in the cool dirt in hot environments).

in basic terms those canines be responsive to for optimistic. every person else is basically guessing. we are in a position to word behaviours, we won't be able to word inner recommendations strategies (thinking). we are in a position to construct all varieties- and any variety- of theories and p.c.. those that look the main clever and in all probability to us, yet those will continually proceed to be basically that... CONSTRUCTS (no longer undeniable data). yet another further difficulty is that individuals often seek for *THE* rationalization why some animal (or guy or woman) does something, on an identical time as there could be a brilliant style of motives. each man or woman and each unique set of situations might call for a distinctive reason. So enable me upload yet yet another thought to those that have been already suggested right here... in keeping with possibility often times the dogs is attempting to eliminate a definite fragrance. i'm asserting this with the aid of fact i've got observed that the canines i've got owned look to do it plenty much less after their bedding is freshly wiped sparkling. And yet yet another thought could be to alleviation itchy paws. fairly in canines who look to lick (or maybe chew) their paws excessively, which in turn could be a reaction further on via some hypersensitive reaction. or in keeping with possibility the dogs feels criminal in its tummy and is desperately attempting to locate a fairly extra gentle place with out too plenty tension from the mattress's cushion. regrettably, my previous dogs died of maximum cancers in her liver and lungs and who knows the place else interior her abdomen. The final 6 months before she became clinically determined she looked as though it could be somewhat extra under pressure, and that i observed this 'digging into the residing room cushion' situation, which she did no longer fairly do often before. She additionally went via a level the place she frantically licked her paws fairly plenty, which became additionally something new. via pointing out this, i wish i'm no longer inflicting mass hysteria to all dogs vendors who've canines that lick their paws plenty or dig into their bedding. ;-)

I agree that it is a comfort thing. When a dog walks in circles before laying down though, that is attributed to flattening the tall grass before laying down in it.

Yes, both our dogs love to "fluff" We keep a quilt on the couch so they dont fluff directly on the couch and tear it up. My dog as a child liked to fluff too.. its just instict to make themselves comfy.

I call it "fluffing", as it's kind of like when you fluff up your pillow before you lay down. I think they are just trying to get everything situatated to where they will be comfortable.
