We need the return of Christ in our hearts and minds, who, as the Word of God has already been given to us, currently by the Holy Spirit, who tells of Jesus (John 14:26).
God controls heaven, but in Genesis 1:26 it says let THEM have dominion over the earth. God's plans never change. Since we are in charge to spread the gospel to every nation, it is our duty as followers to spread the love and replenish the earth with the direction of the greatest problem solver ever. He can (and will) do it through us.

The only time that Jesus came before was to die for our sins on a cross! The next time he comes will be when he takes his believers to heaven!! There will always be hate and problems in the world! we can pray about the problems in the world and let Jesus's will be done! but he is not going to return to earth just to fix the worlds problems! He will return when he is ready!!

Part of me thinks only a miracle would do it; part of me thinks we just need to start seeing the humanity in each other, which I think would be even more of a miracle than Christ's return at this point.

Nope. I think the gods are going to leave it to us to solve the problems we made. There have been world problems just as bad in the last 2,000 years and no gods intervened to my knowledge.
