Well, how to care for dogs is a start. Knowledge of feeding, grooming, and medical care are essential.

Second, logistical knowledge of such a business. How much space are you going to need? How will you be able to divide out that space for the needs of the kennel?

Contingency plans. If you are booked for certain schedules, and something happens where you get overbooked, what happens?

All that is just a start, and relative to the kennel aspects. There are still all the other general business concerns.

To start a successfull kennel, first you need to know if where you want to put it is ok as far as ordaninces. You'd be suprised where you CANT build a kennel. Also, how big do you want it? Anything less then 40 runs will be a waste. Try to make it large enough to have a seperate cattery, and exotic animal space. A seperate kitchen/small first aid facility as well. Also, consider incorporating grooming and seperate quarters for that as well. A small but neat reception area.
Research what kind of chemicals your going to clean your kennel with. (alot on the market are toxic) Plumming, heated floors, and AC really are necessary because every other kennel has them now, and you'll need to compete. Price your boarding rates according to the dogs weight. Larger dog = larger price. Offer to feed an excellent food during thier stay as well (nutro/nutrena/innova evo, etc.) Offer blankets and bedding as well. The less people have to carry in the better they like it. Employ only experiances dog handlers. Offer walking packages, day care, etc. Carry a few supplies.
Check out and compare insurance rates, spend the extra money on better made products when building the kennel. Better steel on the cages. Reinforced fences, and area fenced in where the dogs can run free for a few minutes each day. People treat thier dogs like thier children, and want the best.
Advertise your business where ever you can. Offer discounts on multiple pet stays. Offer to have your kennel inspected at any time by a prospective customer and become a member of the American Kennel Association. Keep it as clean as possible. Use good cleaning products made specificly for kennels. There are so many little things you can do to keep customers coming back and refering you to others. Key words for a succesfull kennel... Location, Cleanliness, Knowledable staff, special insentives.

You should try out a dog sitting franchise first, it is called "Fetch" pet care. They have a very low fran. fee of 5,000 and it's looking like a better solution for when people leave out of town. They are in alot of states right now so they are dependable. A little off the subject but hope this helps anyway.

Don't kill the dogs.

And don't let people see what the kennel actually looks like; no matter how nice the tower of barking dogs is, it is never nice enough for the owners
