Towards the end of chapter 45, Joseph's father is referred to as Israel, then in the beginning of 46 he is referred to as Israel. Why the sudden name changes.
Yes, I know that Jacob's name IS Israel but why is it alternated in these chapters?

I KNOW his name was changed, I am looking for some insight on why, once it was changed did they not use that name from that point on? Why are BOTH names used in the same conversation? Pure coincidence (i.e. nickname versus given name) or something more significant?
Please, read the passage before commenting...

See Gen. 32 verses 24-29; this is the place where Jacob is given the name of Israel, and why. Esp. v 28: ". . . for as a prince hast thou power . . ."

Really, they use the two names on different occasions probably like you might call someone formally "Joshua", but informally "Josh". There is probably some significance to each name that we don't know, but if you find out the roots of the name "Israel" and "Jacob", perhaps you can come up with some reason.

Because God chose to give him another name.

Saul became Paul...better yet God renamed Abrahm to Abraham.
Jesus (God) renamed Peter(cephas..the rock I'll build my church on)

There are numerous examples in the Old and New Testaments of people's names being changed.
