I have serious depression problems. Sometimes, I just get depressed for no reason. When I get REALLY depressed, I just go to my room and CRY my heart out. I'm only 12 years old, and I've even gone to social workers about it, but nothing helps. I've tried talking to my parents about it, but they don't know where the depression is coming from. No matter where I am, or what I'm doing, I just get DEPRESSED. It's hard to even get me to smile most of the time. I don't know what's wrong with me....... But my life is mainly all about depressing and stress. Those are the main two things in life that bring me down. For three years, I've been so stressed that I would scratch my head. Now it's become a habit. Not one day in three years, have I not scratched my head, and I even have scabs and scares on my scalp to prove it. Everyday, I try to stop, but the stress just keeps getting to me........ I get lonely alot, so if you ever want to email me, do it at kittykatz55@yahoo.com. Please help?

Nicole, what you're telling here is very serious. At 12, you shouldn't be depressed and stressed all the time, and if you've felt that way since you were 9, you need professional help. Talking to your parents is good, but they won't be able to help you get rid of the depression. They can support you in a lot of other ways, like helping you find a good child therapist. You should also get a physical checkup.

Social workers are great in many ways, but they're not trained to deal with depression. They can help you in other, more practical ways if that's what you need.

Sometimes, you can get depressed from *real* things, like if a relative or a pet dies, or if you've got too much going on in your life, or if you feel lonely. Sometimes, depression comes from within. The reason can be chemical or it may have to do with the way you think. A good therapist will help you find what's causing your depression and help you deal with it.

From the way you write, I think you're above the average intelligence level and that can be a pain, too, at least at age 12. You're also entering puberty and lots of things will happen to your mind and body over the next few years.

If your parents don't take you seriously, talk with an adult you trust and ask him/her to help you talk with your parents. Maybe you have a relative, a neighbour, a friend's parent or a teacher you can talk to. You need your parents to understand how lousy you feel and how long this has gone on.

Please be careful on the Internet. Some people will say they want to help you, but they may have weird reasons for approaching you, too.

I wish you good luck. Things can be different. You'll see.

Well, there could be alot of reasons why. First I'll start with your age...Your at a time in your life when hormones play a big part in depression type symptoms. Second, it's also a time where you are transitioning from a child to an adolescent. These types of feelings are normal for this phase in your life. Unfortunately, I feel that you are too young for medication and don't really have any good advice for you other than keeping your line of communication open with your family and you doctor. Hopefully these feelings will pass and you'll begin to feel better soon. Very much luck to you!

some people say that depression is a result of angry directed inwards. It's like your angry at someone or something but instead of letting it out In a healthy way it becomes bottled up inside and turns into depression.
talk about your problems with a close friend or your parents if you feel confident. getting things off you chest is the best way to sort out all of the emotional things that are going on in your life.
Lastly take time out for you, go for a bike ride, take the dog for a walk,whatever... find something that you enjoy doing and make it a part of your schedule and remember to relax. At 12 years old you have very few responsibilities enjoy this time and remember your a kid!

There are a lot of ways to get rid of depression. Ask your parents to make an appointment with a psychologist, you might hate going at first, but it will help in the long run. get a bunch of hobbies and fill your schedule, that will help. Volunteer at a hospital that will definetly raise your spirits as you see how good you actually have it. As for your head get a rubik's cube and every time you feel like scratching your head play with the cube instead. Good Luck.

There are lots of places that you can get help. Ask your parents to take you to a Psychiatrist so they can evaluate you. There are several forms of depression that can't be helped just by "talking" about it. You may need medication for your problem.

It will pass
confront the source of your pain
address it, then let it go and move on
it will pass

(btw the person who gave me the phrase it will pass has motor neurone disease, is in a wheelchair and can not even feed herself. What I am saying is things could be worse.)

Get your parents to get you some help. A combination of therapy and medicine is probably best for you right now.
