There are three components that when their bad will cause the deep growl when you are using it and the food will not get hot as fast. They are the diode capacitor and the magnetron. The diode and the capacitor are relatively inexpensive repairs (less than $60) the magnetron is quite a bit more. If it was the transformer it would smell bad and then open the fuse (go dead). If you continue to use it you can start with a bad diode, it can damage the capacitor or even damage the magnetron. One more thing, look inside and find the place where the microwaves enter the cooking cavity and make sure you keep the mica clean. sometimes food gets on it, and a hole is made and it starts arcing, and this causes the microwaves to bounce back into the magnetron causing premature death

If it sounds like it's not working properly and it's no longer in warranty, then your best bet is to just replace it. Microwaves have come down so much in price, that they're virtually disposable (you can pick one up for about $40) and it's not worth your safety to save a few bucks by using a malfunctioning unit.

If it starts to smoke or spark it's probably going to blow. I'd get rid of it now before that happens.
