Congratulations on having a son with ambitions! It'll be quite a while before he can apply to med school anyway, he'll need a bachelor's in pre-med first. That time in undergrad will give him plenty of time to explore his options, and a decent amount of exposure to some of the things he'll see in medschool, should he choose to pursue them.

He must want it or he will not make it. I think the first place to start is a phone call to your local doctor for an informational interview. This is where he asks questions about the profession so he may take a good hard look at himself to see if this is what he wants. Then it will be four years of regular college in some kind of pre med program, this may event be a biology degree but he needs to maintain above a 3.5 GPA. Then he can worry about med school.

I believe that the first couple of years would be normal courses for a well rounded education, with an emphasis in biology. If he would like to apply for medical school, have him visit the school - I am sure that they would have career counselors/guidance counselors to help out with his decision and would be able to give him the prerequisites and qualifications that he would need. If nothing else, given the courses he would probably take as a freshman and sophomore, he would get a good start no matter what his final career choice would be...

believe it or not the military does have a test you can take that tests your talents. It is call the asbad(sic). Even though your son does not plan on joining the military he may want to take that test anyway to see what area his natural talents lay?
Or he could just go to school for his bachelors (which he needs anyway if he wants to go to medical school) and see how he feels then. If he really wants to be a doctor also encourage him to take up music. It teach great eye, hand coordination which he will need. (Most students in medical school have been found to have taken music classes.) He just needs to see what is out there it sounds like, so let him go explore.
Also maybe see if your family Dr. would like to have him come visit his office for the day and see what it is like. Or he could volunteer at a hospital.

Well let him do it, if it is not for him he will find out, he needs to have a plan A, and a plan B. Let him know that medical school is no fun and games it is hard work, and tons of dedication, and there is no room for playing around. Tell him that, because I know am going thru Med school right now, I know from personal exp. the things he will go thru, and also getting into school is another thing, tell him not to give up. If you want to know exactly what to do, or you have any question feel free to ask me anytime from my email contact on my profile.

Well, being fresh from high school, your son is not going to be qualified. He needs to apply to a 4 year university to get his Bachelors degree (it would helpful if it was in a science-related field). After that he can take steps to apply to a med school. He really needs to do some serious thinking about it. It is a huge thing to embark on.

Suggest he talk to doctors and ask them what they think of their work his prospects,
a good book is What color is Your Parachute,
It will suggest how to get interviews with doctors
There are many types of doctors, who do many different things
If you send me an e mail I may be able to give you the phone number of a friend of mine who is a doctor who may be willing to talk to him
He's going to have to take a lot of science courses in college before he can apply to medical school is he prepared to take hard courses in chemistry and biology
He might try working around doctors, by getting a job or volunteering to work in a local hospital, This would also give him a chance to talk to doctors
It would be a good thing for him to do in college also if he still wants to be a doctor

wow I would be proud! Its a major commitment of his life just to get there. then everything that goes with it...internship and all the long hours. If it was my son I would have him visit a local medical school and try to talk to one of the students there also a new doctor would be very helpful. Many will make time to talk to both of you. I hope he is a compassionate person and is selfless, being open minded with a pleasant disposition is very important. good luck!

First your son needs to complete undergraduate course work before he can apply to medical school. It takes several years. First he needs to apply to, and be accepted by, an accredited university which likely also has a medical program.

He needs to go to undergraduate university first, majoring in pre-medicine (usually a science) and then worry about applying to medical school in his junior year of university. By then, he should know for certain whether this is really what he wants to do.
