I'm in my early twenties, and I'm just starting to grow out my hair because I've been dying it since highschool. I'm finding that the hair around my face is growing in curly. I've had straight hair all my life; is my hair spontaneously curling? Is this highly unusual?

It's not; mine got wavy around that age, and my beloved was really surprised, after years of shaving off her straight hair, to see it come in curly at age 30. It happened with almost every woman in my father's family. Look at your relatives!

As a child I had long wavy, but mostly straight hair. I kept it cut very short from about age 12 to age 20 then decided to grow it out long again. When I did, it came in very curly. And has been very curly ever since.

I don't know how common this is, or even what causes it but your not alone!

The same thing happened to me, and I started getting worried about it because it wasn't nice curly, it was frizzy curly!! Then a genius pointed out that I'd just moved to the coast and it was the humidity! I felt like an idiot as that was a pretty obvious answer...
Is it not maybe just humid weather that's doing it to you?
My friend's hair was dead straight until she cut it really short and it grew out beautifully wavy.

No. It's not unusual for a person's hair to become more curly as they get older.

Mine started doing that while going through puberty. I developed a nice wave in my hair.
This is caused by the follicles changing shape and the individual fiber of hair going from round to oval. If you use a microscope, you can see that.

sometimes right after puberty, your hair will change from straight to curly. this happened to a friend of mine. when she started taking birth control in her 20s, her hair went straight again...

its not unusual...mine was straight and turned wavy around 10th grade...i think a lot of it is just hormones and genetics and it just takes some time to kick in...i know a lot of women's hair changes when they get pregnant.
