LCD (liquid crystal display) is available either as flat panel, rear projection or front projection TV; DLP is available as projection TV only. To learn the techincal difference, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/lcd_display...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/dlp...
At present, DLP provides higher brightness and more contrast than most LCD. An exception is the Sony SXRD, which can match DLP contrast and black levels. You have to be wary of the "rainbow effect" in DLP displays: before buying a DLP TV, look at a picture with bright areas and scan your eyes across the screen. If you see a trail of colors, you can see the "rainbow" and you may want to avoid this set. Many people (including me) cannot see these, but some can. For all sets, check off-center viewing of the screen. LCD flat panel in particular can lose brightness and contrast in off-center viewing. Both LCD projectors and DLP projectors are available in "1080p" resolution (they display 1920x1080 pixels on the screen). However, only the Sony SXRD is true 1080p; the DLP sets simulate this resolution with a tecnique called "wobulation". See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wobulation...
These DLP sets do provide a high resolution picture that is a little "softer" than the LCD units, but some people find that preferable (more "film like").
You should go look at the set and decide what you like better.

DLPs, brand recommendations are HP Pavilion the models MD5880N which is a 58" and the MD6580N which is the 65".
Both are capable of receiving AND displaying full high definition at 1,080p Resolution. The only problem with most DLPs and LCDs is the lamp does not last more than 8-months.
Although they are rated at 6,000-Hours most don't even past the 2,000-Hours mark and they are not cheap either, some cost as lows as $300.00 and as high as $600.00 depending on the brand.
Hewlett-Packard is going to released in mid-September the iD5286N a 52" full HD DLP with a LED module instead of the replacement lamp light engine. this will make the lamp replacement issue a thing of the past.
Other Good DLPs worth mentioning are the Samsung and Mitsubishi models. Samsung, like Hewlett-Packard will introduce LED-based sets this fall along with their regular lamp DLPs.
Mitsubishi is also working in an alternative laser-type technology to the replacement lamp issue for their DLPs and LCDs, laser technology which is sort of similar to LED has it's advantage of delivering superb accurate colors and deep blacks. These sets will not be available until 2007 or 2008.

LCD's have the advantage of thin profile, but that is about the only advantage (IMO). DLP's generally offer wider viewing angle, lower price for a larger screen, and low maintenance.
I have had a Samsung for a few years with no service calls and no diminished picture quality.

DLPs have far better blacks. However, you have a bulb that will eventually burn out and need to be replaced.
It's really a matter of personal taste.
If you want more info on DLPs, check out this site...

They have a top 10 list on the front page that should give you some ideas.

i have a DLP and prefer it...pictures are better (IMHO)....don't need to worry about burn-in like you do with an LCD...
but, some people see what is called "Ghosting" with DLP's...when something fast moves across the screen it creates a ghostly image and is not smooth...if you see that, you have to get a LCD....

I recommend DLP. Cheaper, will last forever and picture quality is pretty good. go for 1080 resolution.

Not sure which is the best but what ever you do, DO NOT BUY MAGNAVOX/PHILLIPS OR PURCHASE AT CIRCUIT CITY. Both have the very worst customer service you ever imagine.
