You can always shoot em some jokes, or some cool stories you have read on-line, etc...
Of course you may want to change to e-conversation into a real life conversation, so when you see him at some point, take a risk and ask if he wants to join you for a cup of cofee or somthing low key like that.

"Hello" has always worked for me. Ask for a special binder clip or something odd that he might have and you definitely don't have. You don't want him to hand you something that you have a pile of on your desk. That might work. Lame. But it might work.
