Most well known is Red Rum for winning three Grand Nationals but the best horse without a doubt was Arkle, three Cheltenham Gold Cup plus a lot other top races.

Could I throw a spanner in the works and suggest that Best Mate was a better horse than Red Rum, and would challenge Arkle as best NH horse of all time.

Red Rum was a National Horse, i.e one suited to a special race, under specific conditions. It was a handicap, the first time Rummie won he was carrying a very low weight and just beat a class horse Crisp, who was conceding lumps of weight.
Arkle oozed CLASS and won Championship races at Cheltenham as well as other level weight contests, and was also capable of giving weight in Handicaps. THE BEST NATIONAL HUNT HORSE EVER!

Arkle without a doubt. Red Rum was a very good horse but he only showed his best around Aintree.
Don't forget there were two handicapping systems in place in the 60's - one for races with Arkle and won for races without! Says it all really.

Anyone who answers anything but Arkle knows nothing about jump racing or steeple chasing to give it the correct name.
The GN is a handicap race and therefore not a championship race. The GN is unique in racing and although less barbaric than it was it is simply a spectacle for the bloodthirsty.
Arkle won championship races, Red Rum never did.
Incidentally, Arkle was commonly known as 'Himself' when referred to.

Red Rum hands down but Alleged would give him a run for his money had he really had a chance to show what he was made. of. Sad Story.
