I have been on thyroid medication for over 25 years now. The medication stays pretty much the same, same dose. I have hypothyroidism, though I am a little bit of the exception for someone with a thyroid problem. I'm a little underweight because I hate to eat. I don't like the way it makes me feel after eating. My metabolism is very slow and I feel extremely sluggish. As to your weight gain, you should be under a doctors care. The more weight you gain, the less your thyroid can manage (so to speak) , and in conclusion, the more weight you WILL gain. A doctor will definitely hesitate to remove a thyroid unless it has totally stopped functioning or diseased. The only thing that will help you to lose the weight is the help from thyroid medication (to get your metabolism going) and a weight program to get you back to where you would like to be. Did you know that a few of the other things thyroid plays a part in is sensitivity to cold, hair, memory and metabolism.

You can gain weight if your thyroid is under active. If you do have under active thyroid you should be under the care of a physician and be on snythroid, not treating this can be dangerous. When your have the synthroid level correct you could loose weight. The thyroid gland can most definitely be removed but as stated you must take medication daily for the rest of your life. It is not, however, routinely removed because it is under active. You need to see a physician ASAP.

Yes, I know two people who had their thyroids removed. They have to take synthetic hormones forever to make up for not having it.
Usually it's an overactive or diseased thyroid which is removed. It sounds like yours is underactive if you've gained a lot of weight.
Neither person I know without a thyroid has/had a weight problem and I still have mine so I can't help you there.

I had to have half of my thyroid taken out due to cancer and am now looking at having to have the other half removed. So yes it is possible but there have to be good medical reasons.
Also, yes I weigh less than I ever did but it is not a nice feeling. I am under weight and eat constantly.
But people are no nicer to someone who is underweight than they are to someone who is overweight. I was once asked at a party how it felt to look emaciated.

My mom battled with her thyroid issues for over 20 years and a couple years ago had her thyroid taken out. It was not pretty at all (it looked like she had her throat slit), and she has to be on medication for the rest of her life, but it was medically necessary. You really do need to talk to your doctor about the issue and she if they think its a good/beneficial idea for your particular situation.

My gf had her thyroid removed and has to take synthroid everyday. However, she gained about 100 pounds.

Yes, you can have your entire thyroid removed but you have to take synthroid the rest of your life. I know someone who had it taken out because of multi-nodule growth. He was not overweight but if he does not take the synthroid he gets very tired and sluggish. Go see a good ENT(ear, nose and throat) doctor.

it is possible to surgically remove the thyroid gland, this procedure is usually performed in cases of thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism (when the gland produces hormones in excess). after this procedure it's necessary to take synthetic hormones in order to replace those produced by the gland.

Yes it's possible if you want to die. Removal for weight loss is not a good enough reason for removal.
