I was with him for 6 years and engaged for 5 he broke it off totally unexpected. we never had serious arguements at all. He didnt give a reason just said that was it. I know there was no other girl involved. I am only 21 and hes 25 so we were very young to get engaged at the time.

aw hun im sorry to hear about the spilt, keep the ring and have a good holiday on the money you make when you sell it, holding onto it will only remind you of him every day, just think you might meet the man of your dreams on hols, now that would be sweet revenge.

Enagagement rings were originally considered the equivalant of a non-refundable deposit. This goes back to when daughters were a property to be given as property to a husband. If the man broke the engagement the daughter could be considered damaged goods, but at least the family had the ring.

Barbaric and out dated yes, but the tradition is that you get to keep the ring, woudl you give back other jewlery?

No you shouldn't give him back the ring unless you really want to.It was given to you as a token of his affection for you.He might actually be rather hurt if you do give it back.I still wear the ring my ex gave me partly because I feel bare without a ring on my finger and partly because when I look at it I remember the good times we had together and it makes me smile. It also reminds me that I was loved by him if only for a short while.I try to cherish the memories because the best loves don't have to last for ever.

All guys know that if we break off the engagement the ring is a consolation prize. If he demands it back then it is up to you if you really want to stick it to him and make him take it to small claims court, where you will most likely win.

The ring was a gift to you. Gifts aren't meant to be returned. The only exception to this would be if the rin were an heirloom. While you are not under any obligation to give the ring back it would be a kindness on your part.

depends - if it is an engagement ring then it was given as a promise of marriage which is no longer going to happen so give it him back.
on the other hand if it was also a combined birthday/xmas/valentine present keep it.

Good luck.

No - it's yours in this case. You had it on your finger for 5 years...and HE broke it off ...you don't owe him that ring ...it's yours.

If it were a different scenerio...and you only had the ring a short time...or YOU broke up with him - it would be different...but even if this went to court...you would (in this case) be rewarded the ring. Hands down - guaranteed.

I think you should give it back if he can give you a genuine reason why you two can't be together.

But otherwise, that ring, although a sign of your love, was also a gift from him to you and if he ain't explaining, it's yours for the taking.

My wife and I both lost our wedding rings the same day - one week after we split, that was strange. It upset me quite a lot. I would have kept it as a reminder of all the good times we had, why don't you? Unless you didn't have any!
