Because of how revolutionary it was at the time it was created. It might not seem like much now-a-days but back in 1656 it was phenomenal. Its a painting of the princess and her entourage but the painter is looking at us the viewer, are we to feel as if we are sitting for the painting he is working on? In the mirror behind the princess is her parents standing in our spot. Is he painting them or did they stop in to see how the painting of the little girl is going? We also are invited up and outside the painting by the man on the stairwell. It was revolutionary - the reference to our world, the painted world and the world beyond the stairs.
