It is not meant to be a requirement to tithe. They should accept you as is. It is a good idea though to help support the church and keep the doors open.
I do know some religions require a tithe or they will ask you to leave. That is sad.
What is even more strange is some of these megachurches charge a membership fee to have reserved seats down at the front. However they run more like a show than a church. So I guess that makes sense.

If you HAVE to pay money to go to your church then get out. I am speaking as a christian. (not a catholic) The money you choose to tithe is strictly between you and God, not you and man.
The bible states: "Where your treasure is, there is your heart."
The act of tithing is a way to show yourself your committment to God, not your committment to church. If God needed the money do you think He would be depending on you to provide it? No.
God is all powerful and therefore does not need your money but he does want your heart. One way to show your committment is to give something of importance to His cause: money (or time,etc.). The money people give allows a church to function in a society where money keeps the lights on, sends mailers to the community, etc.
Tithing is a voluntary act that does please the Lord, but it should never be done to please anyone else or with a hardened heart.
I hope this has helped. God bless you in your journey.

If nobody gave anything to their church, the church would have to close up. Even with no taxes, there are lights, heat, air conditioning, a lot of upkeep, etc. Where would the money for this and more come from if no one contributed ?

Sassy Says... I do not know of anyplace that makes you pay to go to church, I know that most churches ask for money by passing the collection basket, but it is not manditory to give. I think that the churches use the money for rent, utilities, and electric, and I know that those bills happen and if they dont have money to pay them the church will not be able to pay. No pay No church..

You don't have to pay to go to church. If there is a church that requires it, you should flee like the dickens. Churches ask their members to help with the finances of the church since their only source of money is from their membership. However, I also know that many people give because they feel that God gave to them first. It's not in the sense of obligation but of thanks to God and giving back to Him is a way that we can see his greatness come out. I personally know what my preachers use the money for. They get a salary and what they do with that is really not up to me. However, outside of the salary (which is a number that is public to me) I know where every dollar goes if I choose to ask for it.

You don't pay to go to church..... when people give it is because God commands us to give a tenth of our making. In Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God?Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? in TITHES and OFFERINGS. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be enough to receive it...... It is not your money anyways.....It all belongs to GOD

I'm Catholic, they don't require my money...then they release a statment. Don't you pay attention. Some of the money goes to the parish, some to the diocese and some to the CRS (look below).
