I have heard that only the males talk. I have also heard that they will only repeat what one person says to them. I had one several years ago and the way I thought him to talk was to get a tape recorder. I made a 30 minute tape of me saying "Pretty Boy" I played that when ever I was out of the room or when I went I left the house.. It wasn't long before "dippy joe" started talking. He started with Pretty boy and from there just picked up anything he liked. After he started talking tho, it was hard to shut him up!

Yes, though they're not the greatest talkers :-P . People say males are the talkers, but I had a female that spoke more than any of my other birds, including one of my conures! The idea is to talk to the bird all the time. Walk around your home and point out other pets, people in the home, objects, and even if it's raining or sunny out side. Use certain words for certain events in the home, such as 'Night night' for when you put you guy to bed and 'good morning!' when you wake them up.

As a whole, Cockatiels are better at whistling. Some birds are excellent at mimicking the Andy Griffith theme. My male breeder can say 'night night' but prefers to whistle the sounds of the words. I also whistle a special 'hello' when I walk into the bird room and my male cockatiel has copied that down exactly. Mind you, so have my green cheek conures ^.^ .

Good luck!

Yes! Simple repetition and reward, just as you would teach a dog tricks. Birds have some limitations on what sounds they can make, with exception to African Greys and Mocking birds, other species may be quite limited. Usually birds will only mimic what they like the sound of so you might say a word a million times and the bird will never say it. On the other hand, be careful what you say in front of them because you might say something just once and they will repeat it a million times.

Yes -- my daughter has two, they're lovely and friendly little birds, and VERY chatty. They especially like whistling music, we've noticed -- my daughter taught her first bird to whistle the theme from the Mario video game, and her newest bird learned it from hearing the first bird whistle it.

They both know a few words -- my daughter thought it would be funny to teach the first bird to say "Chicken!"

To teach them, just repeat the word or phrase over and over until the bird mimics you. Cockatiels are naturally very social birds and will chatter at each other, or at you. They don't seem to learn as many words as the bigger parrots like African greys or yellow-naped Amazons, but they're delightful little friends nevertheless.

Enjoy yours!

Cockatiels that I have known usually make GREAT whistlers, but only so-so talkers. My own cockatiel was a male, and he could whistle a few songs, but never learned to talk... which was OK with me :-)

Yes you can! First, don't let him have a mirror. He will mimmick himself, and will not mimmick you!

Then, talk to him all the time, and repeat the same phrases over and over. Whistle little tunes and he'll be whistling with you before you know it! Mine LOVED the theme to Andy Griffith!

You can even find tapes online for teaching birds. They're basically repetitive phrases. It's the repetetion that the bird gets. You could even make your own tape/cd with your voice.

Have fun with it!

Repeat the word or be conscious you choose the chook to study. Repeat it again and again.
