Adopted from local humane group. Have had her about 10 days now. Good dog. but won't pee/poop outside. Even after 15 min walks, won't go, comes inside and pees on paper!! Help! We tried putting paper outside, no good. She is a 24 lb beagle, I cant pick her up tho (bad back), to put her outside when she is using the paper. Any suggestions??

Questions to ask yourself if you are having problems...

Am I taking the dog out enough?

Do I know every time he goes?

Does he have too much freedom in the house?

Am I watching him carefully when he is free in the house?

Is there any physical reason (intestinal parasites, urinary tract infection, etc.)?

Am I trying to move things along faster than this dog is able to learn - therefore skipping steps so the entire picture is unclear to my dog?

Am I consistently praising for appropriate behavior so he gets the idea?

Get puppy pads and relax. Why should a dog have to pee outside? Maybe it likes privacy. Maybe it feels threatened outside. My dog has always used pads. She just started going outside on her on when she was about a year old. She caught on that the other dogs were doing it and she started doing it too. But I still keep the pads in the house because I never want my Piper girl to have to hold it if I am busy or not home.
Dogs can get sick from having to hold their pee.

Take her outside and stay out there until she goes. Keep saying "potty" over and over and that way later on when she hears "potty" she'll know what it means. When she does go pee or poop give her lots of praise, pet her, give her a treat and go back inside. You have to be patient.

I had this problem when I rescued a dog from the humane society. We tied her up then watched her outside, when she did her duty we ran outside quickly to rewarded her. It takes some time but will work.

Try walking her longer if possible, maybe she is scared of outside or she was always kenneled so doesnt know what outside is for. You may have to potty train her from the beginning.
