I'm an Audiologist, and I often contemplate carrying my business cards around with me and handing them out at traffic lights...

thnk about it ..... you were a teenager at one point .... you prolly thought some of the things that you did couldnt hurt you either .... same now as it was back then .. they do it because they want to show off what they have
another part of the answer ..... they play the subs loud so they dont have to hear everything else around them ...... yes its rude and sometimes annoying .... i like it listen to my own music at a pleasant listening level .... but when some ****** pulls up next to me with his subs blarin from hell interrupting MY listening experience the volume goes to max and the bass knob goes full blast
another thing is you gotta stop worryin about the other kids so much .... sooner or later they will either 1) get their subs stolen or 2) lose their hearing .... either way its their choice

Well, it is simple.
The REALLY loud system are people just wanting attention or who have short commings in "other areas" ;)
Now my system is only 200 watts RMS X 2 (400 watt RMS total).
It's not a death monster, but it sounds really good because I planned it that way. I don't need to impress anybody, I just enjoy clear, crisp music.
Most kids (as someone else said) feel the need to be competative.
I am 36, BTW.

Because they think it's cool and they want attention. What's worse is that most of these loud songs have cuss words and I hate that little kids will hear it. At least we can be happy in knowing that those kids who play their car stereos loud will be deaf pretty soon. Ha ha!

I don't have a huge sterio system (for that matter, I think it's VERY STUPID to waste money on subwoofers and sh*t like that), but I listen to music a little bit loud so I don't have to hear things going on around me.

because even though we dont want to admit it we all want some kind of attention. or they want to block out all the other noises. like maybe if they have a loud muffler or whatever it gets annoying and they block it out with music. just a thought.

I don't know. But take comfort in knowing that their stuff is most likely not gonna last long because they are either going to blow their speakers, or it will get stolen. Playing your system loud is like wrapping a bow around it to a thief....

For the same reason middle-aged men that have a mid-life crisis rev the engines to their Harleys. These wanna be bikers make me sick.

It's done to get attention from other people. It is also done to show off their more powerful systems, which is a trait of teenagers, to be competitive.
