My Dentist tells me that I can have them filled but will eventually have to have them crowned. He feels I might just as well have them crowned now. I have lost about 25-30% of each tooth and wish to know the pros and cons of each procedure.

I think that, although it seems expensive, you are better off getting the crowns now. In a case like yours where the break was so severe, it is very easy to break them again even with a build-up, and you could lose even more natural tooth structure with another break. If you break TOO much of a tooth you won't have enough left to put a crown onto.

Crowns will be much more stable in the long-run, and I believe they are much more natural looking than build-ups in most cases.

However, the only person who can make the decision is you! You may have considerations, such as lack of insurance, to little money, time concerns, etc that may contribute to your decision. It's just the dental professional's job to tell your options so you can make an informed one!

Hope this helps you in your decision!

I have a lot of crowns. I think they look much better and last longer, but they are very expensive, especially if the dentist wants to do a root canal before crowning the tooth. Dental plans don't seem to pay much for crowns, but just for fillings. good luck

my sister had crowns put on her front 2 teeth for same reason and is very happy with them. they look perfectly natural and are not discolored. it would also seem to be (having had many fillings and build ups) that the reduced cost of a build up won't pay off in the long run. additionally, like stated above, if you loose more natural tooth by another hit or cavities being able to invade, you run into bigger problems. i had a built up tooth break in half and ended up having to have an implant - now that's expensive!!

Caps are a nuisiance at best, A good Dentist can make the colors match perfectly and it lasts! I have 3 that were done 7 yrs ago and they r still perfect. the caps didnt work well and cost way too much... then had to be redone / removed anyway.
good luck!

Altho small chips can be covered with restorative material with some success ., the nature of the material is such it is prone to edge leakage and chipping and may be quite noticible due to color change . Your problem sounds serious enough to warrant crowns which are considered a much more lasting and esthetic repair.

Depending on your finances, if you can I suggest you get crowns. Buildups are okay in a temporary situation. But almost always they tend to break and then you find yourself coming back to see your dentist over and over because it keeps chipping. Crowns are better, and will give you more strength.

have them built up, I had a crash with my mountain bike, and chipped off 9 teeth, they are all built up now, it takes less time and it looks better than the crowns, and if it breaks the dentist can always put it back, you can eat like before and it costs less!
