I don't carry credit cards, but I have a bad habit of overspending my budget to the point that checks bounce and I wind up in a financial mess. I have even been suckered into those cash advance places.

I use shopping as a way to relieve stress. Yes, I am in therapy and this is an issue we discuss. Before you blast me for asking in this forum, I am looking for people who have been through this before! I have looked into Spenders Anonymous, but the nearest meeting site is a 2-hour drive away.

I budget, I do lists, I shop with cash only (when I have cash), and I even gave my parents my debit card so I can't go to the ATM. I can't get myself to stick to a budget.

If you have this problem, what are some of the things you do to help yourself?

I've been in a similar situation. Since you can't control it, you must get someone else to control it for you. Hire an accountant or a close trusted friend/family member who will manage your finances for you. Ask them to pay all your bills, and give you an "allowance" which is discretionary. All the rest goes into savings for "rainy day" or other goals you may have.
Best of luck to you.

I'm so sorry you are in this situation. Have you ever tried hypnosis or accupuncture. Some people may laugh but I've seen people get great results who have addictions with both methods. It doesn't hurt to call and check into it. You might also try to check into a rehabilitation center or hospital where you can get more one on one time with a therapist to get to the root of why you are doing this. You might try a Psychiatrist who specializes in past life regression and hypnosis. There just might me something you brought into this lifetime from a past life that can be healed throught past life regression. I'm just giving you ideas so take what you like and leave the rest. I wish you the best in curing your problem

Before you buy anything, ask yourself this: Do I really need this? Can I go without this? And most importantly, do I have a place in the house for this? Hope that helps!

Ah yeah... one more thing. If the above don't help, then start shopping at the dollar store.

dont shop. find some other way to relieve stress. when you have to shop, make a list of things that you wanna buy, and take only as much money as you need to buy those things with you.

Check to see if there are online meetings. If you still have the checkbook, give it to your parents too. I agree with Jim, get someone else to manage everything. You're already getting help for it so you're more than halfway there.
