R means Read, the W means Write.

So a RW disk can be Read from once recorded and also written over again and again.

a R disk can only be writtten to once.

as for the + and - signs they show what standard of DVD type is used. the - disks are usually cheaper, but are the older standard. expect the + Disks to eventually become the norm.

your Drive will determine which types of disks you can use. if your drive is + only then it cant write on - disks. if your drive is +/- it can write to both.

Hope this helps bud.

DVD RW is dvd rewriteable. Just like CDRW. You can erase the dvd when you are done and reuse it.

I believe +r is better to use for movies but -r is fine to use and was cheaper than the +r when the formats were fairly new. The reason for teh two formats was along the lines of the same thing when VHS and BETA were out. Fortunately, they created burners that worked with everything. Personally I think there are more dvd players that play dvd -r and therefore that is what I use.

Hope this helps.

Now there is Blu Ray and HD dvds coming out. Again, two different formats, so there will be a struggle on which will win. Just wait and ssee.

dvd recordable are lots larger in length meaning they are able to hold an excellent style of documents. yet dvd recordables are basically for video clips yet they are able to basically carry specific information and those information on the dvd can basically be readable on specific dvd gamers. the place as a cd recordable is made for music to be burned on the disc. and those songs could be performed on maximum cd gamers. besides the reality which you will placed some short small video clips onto cd recordables which would be examine by using some computers

R= writable
RW= rewritable
the plus and minus are different ways of storing the DVD files and are the thing you should look for on your machine when buying discs
