I'm starting to wonder if I offered too much for the day. I'm going to be paying this neighbor of mine, a stay at home mom, $50 tomorrow. She'll have the kids from about 5:50am til about 3. She's going to watch the kids at my house. She can eat here. My kids are 6 and 9. What would you pay her for the day? I'm starting to wonder if $50 is too much.

Actually, I'd guess that might be about right.

You're talking about babysitting for nine hours. $50 for 9 hours works out to $5.55 an hour...which is right around minimum wage.

Obviously, your kids are older and don't need the eagle-eyed supervision that an infant would...but I have recently checked into professional daycare for our newborn child and was quoted $180 per week. That is $36 a day for one child...so $50 for one day for two kids doesn't seem out of place.

I'd say that's a lot, but it depends on where you live, I guess. My babysitter charges $20 a day. My old babysitter only charged $2 per hour! She was cheap!
I'd call some local daycare places in the yellow pages in your area and see what they charge to give you a better idea!

I pay $10/hr for awake hours and $5/hr for asleep hours. That may seem steep but my babysitter is totally awesome. She brings activities for the kids, picks up the house, reads to them and never seems self-absorbed the way most teenagers are. If her rates went up, I'd pay them!

Most drop in programs ask more than that..even though your kids are older, it's just a security thing, I understand that..it think 50. is fair..I get 50 for 1 child and I have them alot longer..

$10/hr is about the going rate for babysitter. $50 for 9 hours is definitely not too much.

Well, that's about $5.55 per hour and the fact that it is an experienced mom, i think that you may even be underpaying her.

for one day, you got a good rate. if she is doing this on a regualr basis, then i hate to tell you, but i think you're underpaying her...especially for 2 kids.

take care.

I'd say $50 is a deal. I make $7.00 an hour babysitting. If she is responsible and kind then she is worth it. Your children are worth it.

Fifty dollars for one day??? I will babysit for you anytime!! Considering that most daycares charge around $65 a week for a 5 year old...........that is overpaying!!!!

that's about minimum wage there so you may actually be paying her too little. but 50 is good if she doesn't complain about it. besides, she's a neighbor.
