I am 7 weeks pregnant now and tomorrow will be my first appt with the OB Nurse. I called the receptionist today to ask about what they take the urine and blood tests for. Receptionist checked with one nurse and told me that the urine is done for any bladder infections, and the blood tests are done for anemia, sugars, see how much iron we have, basically tells them what tests they will have to administer of mine in this pregnancy.
I asked if they determine pregnancy, then receptionist said that they already know I am pregnant and don't take the urine and blood to determine that. I did ask the receptionist to make sure I can take a urine test that proves to them I am pregnant, she said yes she can give me a strip tester and I can pee on it. Is that all that you ladies remember from that first nurse checkup?

I never peed on anything only into a cup. They PG test strip from the cup. The other urine is for bladder infection. Blood is for a bundle of tests. I can't remember exactly what all they will be testing for. You will have to sign some forms to authorize them to test for certain things. They took 5 tubes of blood and I easily filled them all up which is unusual for me, Normally they can't get enough blood from me to fill 1/2 a tube to do my thyroid tests. Must have been the extra blood my body is producing for the baby.

My doctor automatically did an ultra sound since I couldn't remember exactly which day my last period started. Which I've heard they will do if you don't remember the first day of your last period.

When I went to see my ob they did a urine test to make sure I was pregnant. I already knew I was (my boobs got bigger lol). They also do the urine to make sure your iron is not low, any infections. The blood is to make sure about your sugar, and they will also run test on you to make sure you don't have anything but they will have you sign your name to a paper. When they tell you that they are going to take blood ask them why just let her know you want to know whats going on at all times!!! At the end of your pregnancy the should have only taken blood about 3 times all together. Like the first one they will take like 5 tubes, the next one I think 3 tubes the last one about 2 or 3 tubes. Good Luck

Since home tests are 99% accurate they don't usually run a blood test to check for pregnancy. My doctor didn't because I had 3 + home tests and am 20 weeks along now. It is very EXTREMELY rare to have a false + on a home test unless you are on a hormone treatment that contains the HCG hormone.

Yes, they do a urine test & once they confirm that you're pregnant they ask you questions about your last period, etc. They also give you a due date & schedule an appointment for 2 weeks later.

Why do you want them to administer a test to check if you are pregnant if you know your pregnant? They will charge you for it, and it unneccessary. Just do the recommended testing at the recommended times and you'll be fine.

I know one of the tests is an HIV test and you have to sign for that. That one is scary, but mine came back o.k. I really don't know what other testing they do. Good question.
