LEDs usually require at least 1.2 volts and 20mA (milliamps). Using a voltmeter you could probably find somewhere on the circuit board where the voltage is 5 volts, probably somewhere near an IC (integrated circuit). Voltage is found in reference to ground so the black end of your voltmeter should be toching the negative terminal of your battery or ground pin somewhere on the circuit board. A resistor should be placed in series with the LED to prevent drawing too much current which would burn out the LED, use something like 100 ohms brown, black, brown, the fourth color (gold or silver) doesnt matter in this case. Placing the resistor in series just means you will place one after the other or tying them together. The short or flat side of the LED needs to be connected to the negative terminal.

Hooking up an LED is very simple. If you're new to electronics dont let any of this information intimidate you, it is all very simple. In fact, taking an LED holding the short end to the negative terminal of a battery and touching the other end to the positive terminal will probably light it, it will probably burn it out too because it will draw more current than what the LED can handle.

Websites such as Digikey or Jameco electronics may sell LED holders which might make you installation look more professional. Radio Shack may also carry LED holders.

Never mind the comments made below from another user about ground. While not technically correct, most of us refer to ground, common, or the negative terminal as the same thing and in simple circuits it wont make a difference. Some people want to prove themselves more technical than others, but most of us dont waste our time.

The second correspondent says "Voltage is found in reference to ground"

Only if one side of the voltage source is connected to ground.

The question relates to a remotely controlled car.

Do you really think that it will have a connection to "ground"?

You are using terminology which you don't understand.

All gentle beer, Zima, wine coolers, and those malt liquor drinks like Mike's troublesome Lemonade are sissy drinks. Mike's is okay in case you combine it with a shot of vodka. you need to dirnk a British Ale, a German lager, or a micro brew. P.S. never placed fruit in a lager.
