The right kind of dog to get totally depends on your personality and lifestyle. You have to be honest with yourself about what amount of work you're willing to put into it. If you aren't willing to spend time grooming, don't get a breed that requires grooming. If you're not physically active, don't get a breed that needs lots of exercise. On the other hand, if you like to jog or go on long walks, then an active breed is what you want. A very large or active dog might not be good in an apartment. Some breeds are easier to train than others. If you've never had a dog before, that can be a big plus. Base your decision on breed characteristics, not on a cute puppy you see at the pet shop. Go to the AKC website, and find out about the characteristics of the different breeds, but don't limit yourself. The "perfect" dog for you might just be waiting at the local animal shelter.

I would suggest the boarder collie. My sister has one that I take care of right now, she moved into an apartment. This dog is the MOST loyal dog I have ever seen. She has picked up on so many great habits and my children drag her around like a little rag doll, she has never gotten onto them either. My sister used to have a pomeranian, I could not stand that dog.

Research!
How big of a house do you have?
How big of a dog do you want?
How old of a dog do you want?
Do you have time to house break a puppy?
Do you have a fenced in yard to keep the dog safe?
Do you have the time and money to take the dog to the Vet?
Do you have the time to walk the dog every day for 45 min or so?
Do you have time to socialize the dog so it is people friendly?
DO YOU REALLY WANT A DOG?
If you answered yes to all of the questions, then MY suggestion is a Mini schn (small to med breed according to size of parents)...weighs from 6-22 lbs (yes you have to groom this breed every 6-8 weeks)...Boston (no grooming, but sometimes tends to snore)...not too energetic, but not couch potatoes either...Lg. breed...Great Dane...very friendly (almost shy)...no grooming (except nail trimming and a bath)...BIG couch potato...does need exercise though...not a much as most dogs.
RESEARCH IS THE KEY TO FINDING THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU!

Do some research. Take into consideration the amount of space and attention they will receive. If you live in a small space and won't get much time with you - then, well you shouldn't get one, but if you did, get a little non-intelligent one (you can find a ranking of all the breed's intelligence online). Smart dogs get into ALOT of trouble when left home alone too much. As I'm sure we all would.

Dobermans are great because they are smart, loyal, protective and very loving. You can keep them in an apartment as long as they get 14-19 miles of walking/running a week. MOST IMPORTANTLY: remember that a dog is a HUGE commitment and don't get one unless you are willing to take the responsiblity seriously.
Good luck!

My recommendation, if you've got the money for it (around $2,000), is a french bulldog. My friend has 4 of them and they're THE most loving, adorable dogs I've ever met. They're in the non-working group so their main purpose as a dog is to be a companion dog. They're great in apartments (of course, as long as you take them out for walks) cuz of their small size, however they are prone to skin allergies and you can take them out in the heat due to their short snouts. But other than that, they melt your heart when you're around them. Very sweet dogs.

You must be the 300th person to ask this question. You need to give mroe details on your lifestyle, how much time you have for a dog, how active you are, the size of your house and backyard, etc. Otherwise other people's opinions won't help much.

golden retrivers are really friendly and they stay close to you so they dont wander off. they do shed a lot.
if you want a dog that doesnt shed a portugese water dog is for you. they are very friendly and are smart. well so are goldens but still. you do have to get them groomed once in a while because they have hair instead of fur

look into your local animal shelter first. thats where i got sabrina- shes my black lab. youll b surprised alot of animal shelters carry pure breeds that usually sell for thousands. labs are easy to train i couldnt have asked for a better dog. but what will really change a life is getting one that unfortunately had been abused they will love you and do anything for you. pit bulls (Stafford shire terriers) and rottweilers are the most common dogs to be abused.
