It's never too late. Best way to instill work ethic into anyone is to introduce them to real life by making them pay for things that they usually take for granted because YOU pay for them. If he wants to borrow your car, he has to pay you for gas and the use of the car. He wants to have his own car? He gets to pay for his share of the auto insurance. He wants new clothes? Let him go out and earn the money and buy the clothes he wants. He wants pizza for dinner? Tell him to open up his wallet. And don't stop there -- make him chip in for his share of the groceries, and tell him when he turns 18 he gets to pay rent, not to mention the fact that he'll still be required to do household chores like cutting the grass and taking out the trash. If he doesn't like it, he can move out and do all that stuff himself, plus he can be 100% responsible for paying all his own bills. Don't sit by and let him turn into a leech -- make him do his part.

I agree with charging rent at 18. Give him warning, don't spring it on him.
Does he have an interest? If he plays XBOX, could you find out info about game design as a career? Try to inspire him if thats possible.
Also, if you can show him areas where low income people live, homeless shelters etc.
Help him make a connection between no work ethic and no money.
I live in OZ, mostly our homeless are mentally ill or street kids. We have a comprehensive welfare system that will support people for decades. If you live in Australia it maybe harder. As the "need" to work is not so great.
I Worked for Social Security for 6 years and was amazed by the laziness of some people.

Stop giving him any money and let him get a job. If he wants anything he has to earn it, but not though the artificial economy of allowance and chores at home, but through a real economy of a job. You can feed and house him, but he has to pay for his clothes, his car (gas and insurance), and for anything else he may want.

When I was 17, I was allowed to have a summer job, but not while I was in school. I spent a lot of my youth pissing away time and money. Even though I knew I would have to come up with my own money eventually, it was never a reality until after I left college. Necessity is a hard teacher.

Well it's a little late, but you could let him know that the month he turns 18 you're going to start charging him for rent and food, so he needs to get some type of employment. Be reasonable about it and don't charge so much that he feels overwhelmed. Also, make sure he helps with the household chores and ask his father or other mature man if he would teach your son a skill or trade.

Offer to pay him for doing a chore that he isn't already required to do. You also should teach him how to write a resume, how to dress for an interview, and how to find a job.

Maybe you could get him involved in some kind of community service. There are lots of organizations that can get him involved. This is an excellent way to network with employers and find out what kind of work he wants to do.

People think that schools teach all of these things. Don't count on it. State assessments are not good indicators of success in the real world. Contrary to what Republicans think.

Not too late. I had none until 22 and just skated by. Now I have been blessed, the last 13 years with jobs, wife and kids. I did everything wrong yet by grace was able to get back on track. Encouragement, frank conversations and not allowing "I don't know" as an answer...

Stop giving him money. Make him give you $5 gas money every time he wants to use the car. When he has a need for money and it's not readily available to him, he'll find out really fast that he has to work for what he wants/needs.
