I have this problem too! Try cutting it and immediately running it under cold water. This helps sometimes. You can also buy milder onions (sweeter) and that will help.

I cut mine either under water or under running water from the faucet. That seems to cut back on most of the fumes, and you can let the ends and outer layers go right down the disposal. If you do get a whiff, sticking your head into the freezer and breathing the very cold air will usually help. Wash your hands afterwards, and the knife. Good luck!

You can use a sharp knife, hold a wooden matchstick between your teeth, hold a piece of bread in your mouth, breathe only through your mouth, chew on a raw onion, chop the onion root last, keep the outer skin on as long as possible, pre-soak the onion in water, wear contacts, or use a candle near the area.

It's almost impossible to do, since the stuff that makes you cry comes from tiny modules throughout the whole onion. The best advice I've heard is to use a very sharp knife. That way, you're breaking as few of those modules as possible.

And whatever you do, don't wipe your eyes with your onion-juice covered hand!! ;-)

This really works!! Take a book of matches, and tear off the cover. Hold the book between your teeth, so that the match heads are under your nose. Breathe through your nose while slicing. The sulfur in the match heads counteracts the irritant in onion gas.

Try cutting it under running water, or using a cold onion.

Chill the onion.
Take a book of matches, open all the way until, the matches stick all the way out. Grip the opposite end (the paper end ) in you teeth. the sulfur in the matches will absorb the onion gasses. You will look silly doing this, but it works!

Onions that have been in the refrigerator don't burn your eyes as much. I have also heard that if you cut them under running water the fumes won't get to you as badly, either.
