The tree represents the attempt of humans to make themselves the supreme moral authority. The serpent didn't just tell them to eat, he said they would "be like gods, knowing good and evil." Humans are finite beings. The presumption to try to take over the role of the infinite God, the sole and supreme moral authority, represents human's turning away from God and trying to make human ideas, leaders, and authorities supreme.

It is not psychedelic mushrooms, that is a load of garbage put forth by anthropologists who took one too many trips into the Amazon, who don't have what it takes to make genuine contributions to the field and as have to rely on gimmicks to sell books to a gullible public.

The Tree of Knowledge of good and evil represents the critical point in human development when we began to judge things and actions. The snake becomes "bad." Nakedness becomes "bad." Sin was born. Before this point there was no good or bad. Everything just was. As soon as men began to declare things good or bad, evil was unleashed.

The evil stems from the judgment. Judging allows man to look at the world as "us vs. them. " We are the good guys, they are the bad, therefore we can/must stop them.

Animals don't have laws and courts. Animals can't judge each other. Animals just do. That is why the tree of knowledge of good and evil is what caused man to loose heaven.

Heaven was the world before judgment, before good and evil.
Earth is where we live trying to remember where we came from. When we stop judging each other and seeing the world in black and white, us and them, then we will be back in the Garden of Eden

There are a couple of interpretations (aside from the absurd literal one).

1. The tree represents a transition from childhood to adulthood. As we grow up, our knowledge increases, which simultaneously makes us culpable for our actions.

2. (Don't laugh, this one is serious) The tree of knowledge represents psychodelic mushrooms long used by ancients to enter into the spiritual world to commune with god.

It represents the knowledge and experiences of good and evil, and just opposites in general (hot - cold, stormy - sunny, sick - health)

I think in modern application (you know - what does it mean for us today?) It has a lot to do with our own daily learning and gaining of experiences. It's a hard process, but I think in the end we're better for it, I mean could you ever know happiness, if you never knew sorrow?

This is not complex.
It represented KNOWING good from evil. Once you know that, you no longer have the innocence of an animal. Animals just dont know and as such, cannot be held accountable.
